Matthew Allen ? Blog Archive ? Connectedness: technology ...

?

I was recently asked to provide a blog post for IBM as part of its ?Shaping Our Future? campaign. The entry is, of course, buried within the site in a way that makes it hard to find and link to. Here is what I contributed:

?

Because of the rise of digital network technologies, the future of human society is all about connectedness. Our lives are changing dramatically, indeed have already changed, because of it. Connectivity is no longer just having Internet access: being ?networked? is now deeply part of our culture and our emotional lives. As we get comfortable with our always-connected state, it becomes part of us in a way that a mere tool can never be.

We now can access (and often must use) software and hardware to create, share and receive information. These technologies permit conversations, collaborations and communities to persist and grow, free from many constraints of time and space. No longer do we need to be in the same place and time to work and play together. And, through network access wherever we are, and powerful mobile computing and communications devices, networked information and communication is becoming ubiquitous.

It is more than just ?the Internet?, though this meta-network is a very significant part of connectedness. The technologies that make the difference also include digital cameras, audio recorders and players, the ever-present ?clouds? of computing power to serve applications and store data, and geo-location services provided by GPS. Databases that store and relate vast quantities of trivial data (often provided unconsciously) also matter: the code is a technology which now defines our way of life.

We sometimes think ?connectedness? is about our family, our friends and our workmates. And, truly, the Internet has changed these social relations and where we experience them. We work from home more, we play at work more. We connect with others through countless forms of digital exchange, reaching out to the person across the street, or across the world. Connectedness makes us imagine the world as our backyard: but we are also ?everywhere? all at once.

It?s not just about connections to others. We also have a different sort of connection to our own everyday life. We snap pictures, update our status, immediately find a key bit of information to put to use, there and then. Layers of data provided by our computers augment the reality we live. In many ways, we are more connected to ourselves than ever before, even as our connections to others become weaker, but more numerous. We see ourselves, online, as others see us; we see ourselves reflected in the mirror of the screen.

Technologies do not make things different: how humans use and adapt the devices and their applications remains vital. Computing technologies are not replacing humans, nor taking over from them, nor stealing our essential humanity. Skynet, the self-aware computer of the Terminator movie series that embarks on a crusade to exterminate humanity, is just the dream of an evil genius.

J.C.R.Licklider, an American scientist in the 1960s had a different dream. He was one of the pioneers in the creation of the Internet, once writing of the ? ?man-machine? symbiosis ? as his vision for the way humans and computers would work together. The Internet, especially in the form of the mobile connected devices which many use intimately every day, is enabling this symbiosis to occur. This dream, unlike the endless (and ultimately fruitless) quest for artificial intelligence, recognises the weaknesses and failings in both computers and humans rather than triumphantly desiring computers to be like humans or vice versa. Only through symbiosis does each compensate for the other.

But humans must also realise that they are not solely in charge of their destinies. Connectedness is becoming a pervasive fact of life. As it does so, humans form a permanent connection with the technologies of networking: they become our partners, not servants. Our future is now shaped by the interaction between our lives and the computers and networks that make them work. In effect, each connected human becomes a part of the network: we give up ideals of freedoms and are no longer autonomous individuals.

Our capacity to express our individual identity ? through Facebook walls, Twitter updates, Flickr photo galleries, Youtube home videos ? has never been stronger. But the basis of that individuality has never been weaker. We are as much data and code as the websites we visit, and the applications we use.

Ultimately, connectedness is the new future of humans and technology. Connectedness not only binds humans together more strongly, but binds us to our technology. It enriches us, but it also fragments our lives into diffuse packets and streams of data which take on lives of their own. Who we are, and how we make sense of things has changed forever.

Landlocked Serbia to set up naval disasters agency (Reuters)

BELGRADE (Reuters) ? Serbia is planning to set up a new agency to investigate disasters at sea, despite having no coastline of its own and little money to spare in the public purse, a government official said on Monday.

Under the draft law, to be sent to parliament for approval when it reconvenes in September, the body will be responsible "for investigation of maritime disasters, proposing measures for avoidance of such accidents and improvement of maritime navigation."

Serbia lost its access to the Adriatic Sea in 2006 when it parted with Montenegro, its smaller partner in the then State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. The EU applicant country has no maritime merchant fleet, but it does have merchant river ships that ply the Danube and its smaller rivers.

"True, Serbia has no seagoing vessels, but it has about 5,000 sailors working on foreign ships and the law must be adopted as part of our efforts to join the European Union," a government spokesman said. "If some day someone registers a ship under the Serbian flag we will be responsible for it."

Analysts were dismissive of the plan, saying it would place an added burden on Serbia's already strained public spending.

Danijel Cveticanin, a lecturer with the Belgrade-based Singidunum University, quipped that the state should set up a space agency as well.

"This is another useless institution that will be fed from the budget," he said.

Among the conditions for joining the EU, Serbia must reform its economy, improve the business climate and root out organised crime, corruption and red tape as well as mend ties with Kosovo its former ethnic-Albanian populated province.

Asian stock markets rise after Fed chief's speech (AP)

BANGKOK ? Asian stock markets rose Monday after Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke's prediction that the U.S. economy will eventually return to full health fueled gains on Wall Street.

Oil prices lingered above $85 a barrel in Asia after Hurricane Irene did little damage to refineries along the U.S. East Coast. The dollar was higher against the yen but lower against the euro.

Market optimism was fueled after a highly anticipated speech by Bernanke at a conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. While he announced no new economic stimulus measures ? as some investors had hoped ? he did leave open the possibility of more action if another recession looks likely. He also emphasized the strengths of the U.S. economy and said the job market will recover in the long run.

"People came to realize that Bernanke is very confident about the economy," said Jackson Wong, vice president at Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong. "People were reluctant to get into the market. Now they are jumping back in."

Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 0.6 percent to 8,846.32. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 1.9 percent to 4,277.70 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.5 percent to 19,879.51.

Hong Kong-listed Sinopec, Asia's largest refiner by capacity, jumped 5.7 percent after announcing that first-half profit rose 12 percent as higher oil, gas and chemicals revenues helped offset a loss in its refining business. The results for the company, also known as China Petroleum & Chemical Corp., were better than analysts had forecast.

South Korea's Kopsi index jumped 2.8 percent to 1,829.09. Leading shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. soared 8.4 percent. Hynix Semiconductor, the world's second-largest memory chip maker, jumped 7.5 percent on brighter chip price forecasts, Yonhap News agency said. Refinery SK Innovation rose 6.5 percent.

Gold-related shares rose after prices of the precious metal rebounded Friday after a volatile week. Newcrest Mining Ltd., Australia's largest gold miner, rose 2.1 percent. Hong Kong-listed Zijin, China's top gold miner, was 1.7 percent higher. Hong Kong jewelry chain Chow Sang Sang Holdings gained 6.4 percent.

Other Australian metals shares rose on the back of higher commodities prices. BHP Billiton Ltd., the world's largest mining company, rose 1.7 percent. Rio Tinto Ltd. gained 2.4 percent.

Mainland Chinese shares dipped, however, amid reports that the central bank is considering further increases to banks' required reserves. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.5 percent to 1,163.99 and the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index was 1.1 percent down to 2,584.40.

On Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 1.2 percent to close at 11,284.54. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.5 percent to 1,176.80. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 2.5 percent to 2,479.85.

The Fed has said it plans to keep short-term interest rates low until mid-2013. Low rates on investments like bonds make higher-risk bets such as stocks more attractive.

The U.S. economy is still hobbled by a depressed housing market, high oil prices and fears that the European debt crisis will deteriorate into a repeat of the 2008 financial crisis.

Benchmark oil for October delivery was up 18 cents to $85.55 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude rose 7 cents to settle at $85.37 on Friday.

In London, Brent crude for October delivery was down 33 cents at $111.10 on the ICE Futures exchange.

In currencies, the euro was up at $1.4497 from $1.4484 in late trading in New York. The dollar rose to 76.73 yen from 76.66 yen.

The history of Pro Wrestling News

Sports Wrestling

Pro Wrestling in itself one of the most original forms of entertainment out there. Some call it a sport to call the one hand, it is a soap opera and others call a traveling show. For something so hard it is equally difficult to drawer for journalists covered the news of wrestling.

Would cover exposed in the era of the dinosaurs was wrestling Wrestling News journalists, as it would have been a real sport like boxing. They would report on theEvents, make notes and then just when a wrestler won. As we have developed and the stories (like soap operas) have been working for the industry, (especially during the era of entertainment and WWE Monday Night Wars) "Mark Magazines" would cover wrestling, as if these stories were real. If The Rock threw Steve Austin in a river (yes, that happened once), the author writes as if it was the craziest thing that could ever happen in a sport was. This was a unique system thathelped to promote the sport. Today a lot of negativity is also reported.

As the Internet developed and "Dirt Sheet" newsletters and websites sprung up, more or less knew the truth all the fans that wrestling was fake wrestling news was not what happened in the ring, but what happens behind the curtain. Nobody wanted to magazines, buy what changes have been seen on television. Insider News is born.

Why were certain wrestlers in the top positions when they were wrong?Who decided somebody would win and why? Instead of a surprise victory over the title of the political reasons behind a lesser star would be getting the victory. This has caused many changes to the deviation of the stories in which the promoters saw results and details online or in printed form.

This is a shock that many insider wrestling publish news pages spoilers and get information long before it aired on television. The reason for this is because over the years have become friends with journalistscertain wrestlers or members of management and the people in the WWE leaked the information themselves.

It is not uncommon to see newsletters or wrestling news sites on the desks or laptops of wrestlers.

Wrestling News is evolving even now. The sheer speed that some of the news sites leaves less "inside" for journalists, from day to day news and analysis. Now many wrestling journalists give their expert opinion on the news orStories instead of writing actual stories.

One criticism that some wrestling news sites involves the receipt of a small number of large sites (most born 1998-2002), which are practically identical and the use of a system of the Union. This includes a few journalists who follow the same messages on all Web sites in exchange for a link on their own, leading to a large network of content exactly the same.

Another point of criticism that includes made ??to Wrestling News SitesJournalists go to a premium service. The reader should be used to access the message from some of the journalists a long time wrestling news that seems crazy in this day and age of free information to pay.

Wrestling news will continue to evolve with the sport and technique. Who knows? Maybe in the future we get wrestling news brain implants?

U.N. deputy secretary general visits Nigeria bomb victims (Reuters)

ABUJA (Reuters) ? United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro visited the wounded on Sunday from a bomb blast at the U.N. headquarters in Nigeria that killed at least 23 people and injured dozens.

Friday's car bomb blew out windows, gutted a lower floor and set the building alight in one of the most lethal attacks on the world body in its history.

There has been no confirmed claim of responsibility for the attack but security sources suspect the violent Islamist sect Boko Haram, which has been blamed for almost daily bomb and gun attacks on security forces and civilians in the northeast.

A U.N. spokesman accompanying Migiro at the hospital where the victims were being treated said the death toll had risen to 23, from an earlier estimate of 19 given by emergency services.

That would make it more deadly than the truck bomb attack on the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad in 2003 that killed 22 people, including U.N. envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello.

"We are working as a team to ensure that the injured do get all the treatment that they require," Migiro said after visiting the hospital, where she shook hands and patted the backs of the wounded.

"For people who had lost their lives we are working to see how they are going to be put to rest," she said.

Migiro later met with President Goodluck Jonathan, who has also visited the bomb site but declined to speculate on who could be behind the attack.

If Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sinful" in the northern Hausa language, was responsible, it marks an increase in the sophistication of its attacks and an escalation from local to international targets.

Migiro said the bombing was "a shocking incident, an attack on global peace and communities."

"I have looked at the ripped-up gate. It is amazing how this happened and we are grappling with that, now ... an investigation is under way ... We will see what we have to do better," added Migiro, who was accompanied by U.N. Security Chief Gregory Starr.

Analysts, including London-based consultancy Songhai Advisory, on Friday questioned how the bomber was able to slip past two U.N. security barriers with apparent ease.

After meeting with Migiro, Jonathan pledged in a statement from the presidency to offer temporary accommodation and help in the reconstruction of the building so the U.N. could "continue doing the good humanitarian work you have been doing."

"He commended ... all efforts to bring relief to those affected by this condemnable act of destruction," the statement said.

Most of the dead were Nigerian, but a Norway official confirmed one of its citizens was also killed. A U.N. official said the organization expected to be able to release the names and nationalities of the dead later on Sunday.

The car's driver died in the blast, possibly making it Nigeria's first suicide bombing.

BOKO HARAM, AQIM OR BOTH?

The BBC said Boko Haram had contacted it to take responsibility for the attack, but such claims are hard to verify because the sect's command structure is opaque and many people claim to speak on its behalf.

Its activities used to be confined to the remote northeast, on the threshold of the Sahara desert, where it has killed more than 150 people in bombings and shootings this year, although it claimed a car bomb at police headquarters in Abuja in June.

It says it wants Sharia law more widely applied in Nigeria, beyond the mostly Muslim north where some states have it, but until Friday had shown no interest in hitting Western targets.

Intelligence officials say they have evidence that some Boko Haram members have trained in Niger and have made contact with al Qaeda's North African wing, which may explain the move.

Jonathan tightened security after the attack and armed soldiers patrolled Abuja, searching cars at roadblocks across the city, which lies in the middle of the country where the mostly-Christian south and largely-Muslim north meet.

Security experts say many of Boko Haram's attacks are done by disillusioned youths, in a region that has much higher illiteracy, poverty and unemployment rates than the south.

A security source on Saturday told Reuters he suspects there may also be a political dimension to its growing attacks, suggesting they are being co-opted by northern politicians angry about Jonathan, a Christian southerner, winning April's poll.

Irene hits North Carolina as it moves up East Coast (Reuters)

MOREHEAD CITY, North Carolina (Reuters) ? Hurricane Irene howled ashore in North Carolina on Saturday on a path that triggered evacuations in New York and threatened the densely populated East Coast with flooding and power outages.

New York City ordered unprecedented evacuations and transit shutdowns as states from the Carolinas to Maine declared emergencies due to Irene, whose 520 mile width guaranteed a stormy weekend for tens of millions of people.

With winds of 85 miles per hour (140 km per hour), Irene had weakened to a Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson intensity scale, but forecasters and officials warned that it remained large and dangerous.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg sternly told New Yorkers that Irene was still a life-threatening storm and urged them to heed evacuation orders.

"Staying behind is dangerous, staying behind is foolish and it's against the law," Bloomberg said at a media briefing at Coney Island in Brooklyn.

Some 370,000 city residents are under orders to leave their homes in low-lying areas, many of them in parts of the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens and in downtown Manhattan, he said.

New York's mass transit system, which carries 8.5 million people on weekdays, was to shut down at around midday on Saturday.

The eye of the storm crossed the North Carolina coast near Cape Lookout around 7:30 a.m. EDT, forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Irene was moving north-northeast along the coast and was expected to remain a hurricane as it hit the mid-Atlantic states on Saturday night and New England on Sunday.

On the North Carolina coast, winds howled through the power lines, rain fell in sheets and streets were flooded or littered with signs and tree branches. In the port city of Wilmington, the air was filled with the sound of pine trees cracking.

"You look outside and it's like nature is dancing for us," said Joe Toledo, who left his mobile home with his wife Cindy to take shelter in a hotel in Havelock, North Carolina.

One unidentified man in the Wilmington area was washed away and feared to have drowned, emergency workers said. Another man died of a heart attack while trying to board up his house, North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue said.

Hundreds of thousands of people were without electricity, power and water systems were damaged and there could be "a major hit" to tobacco crops, poultry and livestock, Perdue said.

"We feel very hopeful that we have avoided a huge slap," she told MSNBC television, noting the storm had weakened below what was predicted two days ago. However, Perdue said, "We're going to have millions of dollars of property damage."

MORE THAN A MILLION EVACUATE

More than a million people were ordered to evacuate from Irene's path, many of them cutting short their summer vacations as they fled beach towns and resort islands. Supermarkets and hardware stores were inundated with people stocking up on food, water, flashlights, batteries, generators and other supplies.

"Our number of customers has tripled in the last day or two as people actually said 'Wow, this thing is going to happen,'" said Jack Gurnon, owner of a hardware store in Boston.

Airlines canceled nearly 7,000 flights over the weekend and all three New York area airports were to close to incoming flights at noon on Saturday.

President Barack Obama said the storm could be "extremely dangerous and costly" for a nation that recalls the destruction in 2005 from Hurricane Katrina, which swamped New Orleans, killed up to 1,800 people and caused $80 billion in damage.

Irene was the first hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland since Ike pounded Texas in 2008.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the military stood ready to help, with more than 100,000 National Guard forces available if needed in eastern states.

In Washington, Irene forced the postponement of a ceremony on Sunday to dedicate a new memorial to civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Tens of thousands of people, including Obama, had been expected to attend.

Flooding from Irene killed at least one person in Puerto Rico and two in the Dominican Republic.

Mel Gibson and ex-girlfriend reach settlement (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? After sparring for more than a year, Mel Gibson and his ex-girlfriend have reached a financial and custody settlement of a bitter dispute that spawned a criminal case and left the Academy Award winner's reputation damaged.

Los Angeles Superior Court officials said in a statement late Friday that Gibson and Russian musician Oksana Grigorieva had reached an agreement after days of negotiation. Terms and conditions of the settlement were not announced, but a hearing Wednesday will be held to discuss the financial terms.

The equally contentious issue of custody of the couple's infant daughter will be handled in closed session, the court announced.

Gibson's spokesman Alan Nierob confirmed the settlement and said the actor-director appreciated the judge's help in mediating the case.

Grigorieva spokesman Stephen Jaffe declined comment.

The former couple have been at odds for more than a year over custody and financial issues in a mostly-secret court proceeding in Los Angeles. In June 2010, Gibson's attorney Stephen Kolodny said that his client had provided his ex-girlfriend with a four-bedroom, multimillion dollar home, vehicle and tens of thousands of dollars a month.

It is unclear exactly how much Grigorieva has been receiving since then.

The "Braveheart" star was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery as a result of a January 2010 fight with Grigorieva and pleaded no contest earlier this year. The actor-director entered his plea in a way in which he admitted no guilt, and Grigorieva cannot use the outcome in a civil case.

He was ordered to undergo counseling and recently completed his community service by volunteering with a children's charity in Guatemala.

The case became an international story after recordings of racist and sexist rants by Gibson were leaked to the celebrity website RadarOnline.com. Sheriff's officials took possession of the recordings as part of their criminal investigation, but Grigorieva's attorney announced in May that he would no longer seek to use them against the former Hollywood superstar in the custody case.

The coming days could prove crucial for Gibson to resolve some of the messiness of his personal life in recent years.

Gibson, 55, recently reached a divorce settlement with his estranged wife, Robyn, and his attorney announced in June that the case should be finalized by Tuesday.

Robyn Gibson filed to end her nearly 28 year marriage in April 2009, just months before Grigorieva gave birth. The divorce has been a mostly private affair, in sharp contrast to Gibson's fight with Grigorieva.

Gibson announced Grigorieva's pregnancy to Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show," but their relationship sputtered after the girl's birth.

In recent months, both have appeared multiple times in court for hearings and meetings with a judge handling their case. Gibson has not publicly spoken about the case.

The leaked conversations recorded by Grigorieva were the latest scandal for Gibson, who was arrested in 2006 for drunken driving; a deputy's report revealed he made a series of anti-Semitic and sexist slurs while in custody.

Despite positive reviews for his performance as a deeply depressed man who can only communicate through a puppet, Gibson's return to the big screen in "The Beaver" earlier this year failed to catch on with audiences.

The First Promo for Rosies New Show

The First Promo for Rosies New Show

Rosie O'Donnell just wants you to know one thing: She's not Kathy Bates or Roseanne Barr. "People in the mall sometimes mistake me for them," she explains cheekily in the first promo for The Rosie Show, which will premiere Oct. 10 at 7p.m. ET on Oprah Winfrey's OWN Network.  for it. Watch it here:

“How are you? Good to see you!” says the actress and comedian, sounding a lot like the chummy Rosie who helmed The Rosie O'Donnell Show of the '90s. “I haven’t seen you in, like, a decade. Where you been?”

O'Donnell implies that her return to work is due to the fact that her four children are teenagers now. When her youngest daughter, Vivienne, 10, a cutie-patootie with a lopsided hairstyle, wanders into the shot, O'Donnell says, "Come over here. Oh, did you do your hair yourself? That's a great look." The overall effect is charming and familiar.

The idea being conveyed? O'Donnell may have left you in 2002 to pursue other interests (motherhood, activism), but she's still your funny, straight-shooting pal. And now she's back with a show that will feature "a lot of entertainment and comedy."

“I think by doing a little bit of a behind-the-scenes incorporated in the new show, you’re going to get to see how what it feels like to be 50 years old, moved to another city, to be divorced, which I never thought I would be, to have one child living with me and another child living at school,” O’Donnell, who split with partner Kelli Carpenter in 2009, told the Television Critics Association last month. “It wasn’t what I thought my life would be and I think that’s the truth for most people who are 50. You got a game plan, you got a blueprint in your 20s or your 30s and by the time you get to 50, you’re like, 'Holy crap, I didn’t expect these kinds of turns.' (You’ll get) to see how that has evolved for me since you have known me publicly in the pop culture way since my early 30s.”

Those who have caught O'Donnell's stand-up act in the last several years, or seen her on HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm, may have to readjust their impression. Her humor is darker and dirtier in her live shows, and in guest spots on Curb over the past few years, she's portrayed herself as an abrasive lesbian with a violent streak. Well, at least towards Larry David's infuriating character, which is understandable. And in last Sunday's episode, she and David competed for the same woman.

This promo, though, seems to forecast a return to her former persona as the Queen of Nice. At least for this TV show, anyway.

In Jobs' second act with Apple, a dramatic revival (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Steve Jobs' resignation as Apple Inc.'s CEO on Wednesday was freighted with sentimental significance, the curtain call on a dramatic 14-year performance in which he rescued one of the world's most beloved brands from the brink of technological irrelevance.

As second chances go, Jobs' stewardship of Apple since returning in 1997 to the company he created with a high school friend in a Silicon Valley garage in the 1970s is widely seen as nothing short of first-class. And his job isn't done; he's staying on as chairman, where it remains to be seen how meaningfully his role in product design will change.

As mercurial as many employees and suppliers and business partners have found Jobs, few can deny how deeply his ideas have transformed the consumer technology world.

Jobs' contributions to the world of technology are numerous. He led a fierce battle against Microsoft's Windows stronghold on the front lines of the personal computer revolution; he changed the way people listen to music; he essentially created the consumer smartphone market and turned tablets from objects of derision into lusted-after luxury items. The innovation attached to the Steve Jobs brand is something that might be impossible to replace.

Investors expressed their concerns with a selloff that knocked Apple's stock down $19.08, or 5.1 percent, to $355.58 in extended trading Thursday, following the announcement that Tim Cook, Apple's chief operating officer, would be assuming full-time CEO duties.

"Apple is Steve Jobs, Steve Jobs is Apple, and Steve Jobs is innovation," said Trip Chowdhry, an analyst with Global Equities Research. "You can teach people how to be operationally efficient, you can hire consultants to tell you how to do that, but God creates innovation. ... Apple without Steve Jobs is nothing."

Jobs has now stepped down twice as Apple's leader, both times under unfavorable circumstances.

Whereas unmatched technical innovation and single-mindedness defined Apple's early years, and unchecked hubris and micromanaging helped doom Jobs' first go-around as CEO, he has redeemed himself, pulling off one of the most remarkable turnarounds in corporate history.

Like many Silicon Valley companies, Apple traces its roots to a garage where two tinkerers came up with an idea that would change technology forever. But perhaps more than any other technology icon who has risen from the scrum of Silicon Valley entrepreneurialism, Jobs has been as much of a polarizing figure as he has been an inspirational one.

He has invented and masterfully marketed ever-sleeker gadgets that have transformed everyday technology, from the personal computer to the iPod and iPhone. Cultivating Apple's countercultural sensibility and a minimalist design ethic, in his second go-around as CEO he has rolled out one hit product after another, even in the face of the late-2000s recession and his own failing health.

Jobs helped change computers from a geeky hobbyist's obsession to a necessity of modern life at work and home, and in the process he upended not just personal technology but the cellphone and music industries.

Perhaps most influentially, he launched the iPod in 2001, which offered "1,000 songs in your pocket." Over the next 10 years, its white earphones and thumb-dial control seemed to become as ubiquitous as the wristwatch.

In 2007 came the touch-screen iPhone, and later its miniature "apps," which made the phone a device not just for making calls but for managing money, storing photos, playing games and browsing the Web.

And in 2010, Jobs introduced the iPad, a tablet-sized, all-touch computer that took off even though market analysts said no one really needed one.

Investors have become enraptured. "Fanboys" follow Jobs' words with almost religious fervor, and shareholders have cast big bets on Apple's prospects.

Earlier this month, Apple briefly surpassed Exxon Mobil as the most valuable company in America, with Apple stock on the open market worth more than any other company's.

Under Jobs, the company cloaked itself in secrecy to build frenzied anticipation for each of its new products. Jobs himself had a wizardly sense of what his customers wanted, and where demand didn't exist, he leveraged a cult-like following to create it.

When he spoke at Apple presentations, almost always in faded blue jeans, sneakers and a black mock turtleneck, legions of Apple acolytes listened to every word. He often boasted about Apple successes, then coyly added a coda ? "One more thing" ? before introducing its latest ambitious idea.

But recent performances have been clouded by a different kind of interest. Observers have scrutinized Jobs' appearance and mannerisms for clues about his health. Apple won't say whether Jobs' health has worsened.

In 2004, Jobs revealed that he had been diagnosed with ? and "cured" of ? a rare form of operable pancreatic cancer called an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor. In early 2009, it became clear he was again ill.

Jobs took a half-year medical leave of absence starting in January 2009, during which he had a liver transplant. Last January, he announced another medical leave, his third, with no set duration. He returned to the spotlight briefly in March to personally unveil a second-generation iPad.

The adoration now surrounding Jobs would have seemed highly unlikely in his early days.

Jobs, whose hippie sensibilities made him somewhat of an outcast in his early adulthood, grew up in California and after finishing high school enrolled in Reed College in Portland, Ore. His foray into advanced formal schooling didn't last long. He dropped out after a semester.

"All of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it," he said at a Stanford University commencement address in 2005. "I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out."

His career in technology started inauspiciously. When he returned to California in 1974, Jobs worked for video game maker Atari and attended meetings of a local computer club with Steve Wozniak, a high school friend who was a few years older.

Wozniak's homemade computer drew attention from other enthusiasts, but Jobs saw its potential far beyond the geeky hobbyists of the time. The pair started Apple in Jobs' parents' garage two years later. Their first creation was the Apple I ? essentially, the guts of a computer without a case, keyboard or monitor.

His ascent into fortune and technological superstardom was swift.

The Apple II, which hit the market in 1977, was their first machine for the masses. It became so popular that Jobs was worth $100 million by age 25. Time magazine put him on its cover for the first time in 1982.

But his rise wasn't without controversy. Three years earlier, during a visit to the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, Jobs again spotted mass potential in a niche invention: a computer that allowed people to access files and control programs with the click of a mouse, not typed commands. He returned to Apple and ordered the team to copy what he had seen.

It foreshadowed a propensity to take other people's concepts, improve on them and spin them into wildly successful products. Under Jobs, Apple didn't invent computers, digital music players or smartphones ? it reinvented them for people who didn't want to learn computer programming or negotiate the technical hassles of keeping their gadgets working.

"We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas," Jobs said in an interview for the PBS series "Triumph of the Nerds."

The approach may have had its critics, but under Jobs, Apple found its rhythm and delivered hit products. He stumbled a few times, however.

Based on what Jobs saw at Xerox, his engineers responded with two computers. The pricier one, called Lisa, launched to a cool reception in 1983. A less-expensive model called the Macintosh exploded onto the scene in 1984.

The Mac was heralded by an epic Super Bowl commercial that referenced George Orwell's "1984" and captured Apple's iconoclastic style. In the ad, expressionless drones marched through dark halls to an auditorium where a Big Brother-like figure was lecturing on a big screen. A woman in a bright track uniform burst into the hall and launched a hammer into the screen, which exploded, stunning the drones, as a narrator announced the arrival of the Mac.

The commercial cemented Apple's image as the opposition party in a world dominated by massive corporations, particularly IBM Corp.

There were early stumbles at Apple that led to Jobs' unraveling. Jobs clashed with colleagues and even the CEO he had hired away from Pepsi, John Sculley. And after an initial spike, Mac sales slowed, in part because few programs had been written for the new graphical user interface.

Meanwhile, Microsoft copied the Mac approach and introduced Windows, outmaneuvering Apple by licensing its software to slews of computer makers.

With Apple's stock price sinking, conflicts between Jobs and Sculley mounted. Sculley won over the board in 1985 and pushed Jobs out of his day-to-day role leading the Macintosh team. Jobs resigned his post as chairman of the board and left Apple within months.

He said the departure crushed him. "What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating," Jobs said in his Stanford speech. "I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life."

Jobs didn't know it then, but the next phase of his career would set the stage for his triumphant return to Apple years later.

Jobs dove into two other companies: Next, a computer maker, and Pixar, a computer-animation studio that he bought from George Lucas for $10 million.

Pixar, ultimately the more successful venture, seemed at first a bottomless money pit.

Then came "Toy Story," the first computer-animated full-length feature. Jobs used its success to negotiate a sweeter deal with Disney for Pixar's next two films. In 2006, Jobs sold Pixar to The Walt Disney Co. for $7.4 billion in stock, making him Disney's largest individual shareholder and securing a seat on the board.

With Next, Jobs was said to be obsessive about the tiniest details of the cube-shaped computer, insisting on design perfection even for the machine's guts. He never managed to spark much demand for the machine, which cost a pricey $6,500 to $10,000.

Ultimately, he shifted the focus to software ? a move that paid off later when Apple bought Next for its operating system technology, the basis for the software still used in Mac computers.

That decision would mark the beginning of the end of Apple's slow slide into the technological backwaters.

By 1996, when Apple bought Next, Apple was in dire financial straits. It had lost more than $800 million in a year, dragged its heels in licensing Mac software for other computers and surrendered most of its market share to PCs that ran Windows.

Larry Ellison, Jobs' close friend and fellow Silicon Valley billionaire and the leader of Oracle Corp., publicly contemplated buying Apple in early 1997 and ousting its leadership. The idea fizzled, but Jobs stepped in as interim chief later that year.

He returned with a vengeance, slashing unprofitable projects, narrowing the company's focus and presiding over a new marketing push to set the Mac apart from Windows. The new ads featured with an intentionally ungrammatical encouragement to computer users: "Think different."

Apple's first new product under his direction, the brightly colored, plastic iMac, launched in 1998 and sold about 2 million in its first year.

Jobs later dropped the "interim" from his title. He changed his style, too, said Tim Bajarin, who met Jobs several times while covering the company for Creative Strategies.

"In the early days, he was in charge of every detail. The only way you could say it is, he was kind of a control freak," he said. In his second stint, "he clearly was much more mellow and more mature."

In the decade that followed, Jobs returned Apple to profitability while pushing out an impressive roster of new products.

Apple's popularity exploded in the 2000s. The iPod, smaller and sleeker with each generation, introduced many lifelong Windows users to their first Apple gadget.

ITunes gave people a convenient way to buy music legally online, song by song.

For the music industry, it was a mixed blessing. The industry got a way to reach Internet-savvy people who, in the age of Napster, were growing accustomed to downloading music free. But online sales also hastened the demise of CDs and established Apple as a gatekeeper, resulting in battles between Jobs and music executives over pricing and other issues.

Jobs' command over gadget lovers and pop culture swelled to the point that, on the eve of the iPhone's launch in 2007, faithful followers slept on sidewalks outside posh Apple stores for the chance to buy one. Three years later, at the iPad's debut, the lines snaked around blocks and out through parking lots, even though people had the option to order one in advance.

Jobs' personal ethos ? he is a natural food lover who embraced Buddhism and New Age philosophy ? has been closely linked to the public persona he shaped for Apple.

Apple itself became a statement against the commoditization of technology ? a cynical view, to be sure, from a company whose computers can cost three or more times as much as those of its rivals.

Longtime fans say they're encouraged that Jobs is sticking around, even in a limited capacity. Cook has received mild approval.

"No one can replace Steve Jobs, but (Cook) is good at what he does, which is make sure the right people have the right jobs," said Jeff Gamet, managing editor at The Mac Observer website. "It's not like as of today everything for Apple changes. It's going to feel a little different, though, because Steve won't have the CEO title."

But Gamet acknowledged that there's a sentimental loss in Jobs' stepping down.

"It sure would have been fun to see Steve at the helm a little bit longer," he said.
