The Rocketeer/Spirit: Pulp Friction

It doesn?t look like there were as many comic-related announcements on Saturday at WonderCon as there were on Friday, but the second day of the con certainly brought some gems.

? IDW and DC announced that Mark Waid (Daredevil, Insufferable) and Paul Smith (Uncanny X-Men, Leave it to Chance) are teaming up for The Rocketeer/Spirit: Pulp Friction. ?Not many writers have been lucky enough to write The Rocketeer or The Spirit,? Waid said in a press release, ?so I feel like I?ve won the lottery. This is one of the most exciting-and scariest-assignments I?ve ever undertaken. Luckily, I?ve got Paul Smith to make me look good!? The first issue of the miniseries arrives in July.

? IDW also announced the creative team for their THUNDER Agents revival. Writer Phil Hester (Godzilla, Wonder Woman) and artist Andrea Di Vito (Dungeons & Dragons) are the latest team to chronicle the adventures of the agents. Dave Sim and Jerry Ordway will provide covers.

? ?Star Trek: After Darkness? will serve as an epilogue to this summer?s big Star Trek sequel. It?ll run in issues #21-23 of IDW?s ongoing Star Trek title, written by regular series writer Mike Johnson with art from Stellar Labs.

? And finally from IDW, the publisher will release Visual Funk, an art book featuring the work of Jim Mahfood, in October, as well as a Black Dynamite miniseries that starts in September. .

? Jeff Smith announced that his next project is called T?ki Save the Humans. It?ll be a free, weekly webcomic, followed by print collections.

? Aspen Comics announced its summer event ?The Elite Saga,? which also serves as a celebration and culmination of 15 years of Fathom.

? Legendary Comics will publish Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero, a prequel to the film coming out this summer. The graphic novel will be written by the film?s writer Travis Beacham and supervised by director Guillermo del Toro. It will feature a cover by Alex Ross and interior art by Sean Chen, Yvel Guichet and Pericles Junior with inks by Steve Bird and Mark McKenna.

New research predicts that rising temperatures will lead to a massive "greening," or increase in plant cover, in the Arctic. In a paper published on March 31 in Nature Climate Change, scientists reveal new models projecting that wooded areas in the Arctic could increase by as much as 50 percent over the next few decades. The researchers also show that this dramatic greening will accelerate climate warming at a rate greater than previously expected.

"Such widespread redistribution of Arctic vegetation would have impacts that reverberate through the global ecosystem," said Richard Pearson, lead author on the paper and a research scientist at the American Museum of Natural History's Center for Biodiversity and Conservation.

Plant growth in Arctic ecosystems has increased over the past few decades, a trend that coincides with increases in temperatures, which are rising at about twice the global rate. The research teamwhich includes scientists from the Museum, AT&T Labs-Research, Woods Hole Research Center, Colgate University, Cornell University, and the University of Yorkused climate scenarios for the 2050s to explore how this trend is likely to continue in the future. The scientists developed models that statistically predict the types of plants that could grow under certain temperatures and precipitation. Although it comes with some uncertainty, this type of modeling is a robust way to study the Arctic because the harsh climate limits the range of plants that can grow, making this system simpler to model compared to other regions such as the tropics.

The models reveal the potential for massive redistribution of vegetation across the Arctic under future climate, with about half of all vegetation switching to a different class and a massive increase in tree cover. What might this look like? In Siberia, for instance, trees could grow hundreds of miles north of the present tree line.

"These impacts would extend far beyond the Arctic region," Pearson said. "For example, some species of birds seasonally migrate from lower latitudes and rely on finding particular polar habitats, such as open space for ground-nesting."

In addition, the researchers investigated the multiple climate change feedbacks that greening would produce. They found that a phenomenon called the albedo effect, based on the reflectivity of the Earth's surface, would have the greatest impact on the Arctic's climate. When the sun hits snow, most of the radiation is reflected back to space. But when it hits an area that's "dark," or covered in trees or shrubs, more sunlight is absorbed in the area and temperature increases. This has a positive feedback to climate warming: the more vegetation there is, the more warming will occur.

"By incorporating observed relationships between plants and albedo, we show that vegetation distribution shifts will result in an overall positive feedback to climate that is likely to cause greater warming than has previously been predicted," said co-author Scott Goetz, of the Woods Hole Research Center.

Gene responsible for short stature of dwarf pearl millet identified

Mar. 29, 2013 ? While pearl millet is a major food staple in some of the fastest growing regions on Earth, relatively little is known about the drought-hardy grain.

Recently, plant geneticists at the University of Georgia successfully isolated the gene that creates dwarfed varieties of pearl millet. It is the first time a gene controlling an important agronomic trait has been isolated in the pearl millet genome. Their work appeared in the March edition of the journal G3: Genes, Genomics, Genetics.

The dwarf varieties are economically important in the U.S., India and Africa, in particular.

The researchers, led by UGA's Katrien Devos, also were able to trace the dwarf gene to plants bred 50 years ago by Glenn Burton, a UGA plant breeder who worked on the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences' Tifton campus.

Knowing which gene controls the dwarfing trait will help plant breeders create more efficient, sustainable varieties of millet that have the short stature some farmers and ranchers want.

"Knowing the actual gene that reduces plant height has allowed us to develop markers that can be used by breeders to screen for the presence of the gene long before the effects of the gene can be visually observed," said Devos, a professor in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences' Institute of Plant Breeding, Genetics and Genomics, housed in the department of crop and soil sciences, and the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences' department of plant biology.

"In the longer term, the knowledge gained in pearl millet will help to develop semi-dwarf lines with high agronomic performance in other cereal crops," she said.

Rajiv K. Parvathaneni, a doctoral student working in Devos' lab, was in charge of tracking down the gene, which works by controlling the flow of the growth hormone auxin through the plant.

He also wanted to understand the mechanism by which the gene controls auxin and to develop plant-breeder-friendly markers that would allow breeders to screen for the dwarfing gene before their plants matured.

The gene that Parvathaneni found affects the downward transport of auxin, which is made in the top part of the plant. If this gene is on, the auxin flows freely, and millet will grow to its full height, about 10 feet. If it is off, the millet plant may only grow to be 3 to 5 feet in height.

Parvathaneni and Devos' team first found which region of the pearl millet's genome contributed to growth and then compared that section to a similar section of DNA from sorghum. Sorghum is a grain related to pearl millet, and a complete map of its genome recently was released by Devos' UGA colleague Andy Patterson.

The comparison revealed that ABCB1, a gene controlling auxin transport and causing reduced plant height in sorghum, was the prime gene candidate controlling pearl millet dwarf stature, Devos said.

Comparative genome analysis, a process in which an unmapped genome is compared to the genome of a similar and more thoroughly described plant genome, is a common method to help identify the functions of specific genes, especially in crops for which little genetic resources are available.

The next step for Devos' team is to work with researchers in other states to understand more fully how auxin transport differs in tall and dwarf millet plants and to verify that ABCB1 is in fact the gene that controls dwarfism.

After Devos and Parvathaneni located the dwarfing gene, they tested pearl millet dwarfs from around the world. All dwarfs caused by a nonfunctional ABCB1 gene have the same mutation as the dwarfs that were first bred by Burton in the 1960s.

Dwarf varieties of pearl millet are not ideal for every planting situation. In Africa, many farmers prefer taller varieties because they use the long stalks for roofing thatch and other applications.

However, where millet is intensively cultivated, dwarf millet allows farmers to harvest the grain with mechanical threshers. Ranchers like dwarf millet as a forage plant because it has a high leaf-to-stem ratio, Devos said.

Knowing more about the plant in general is key to broadening production of the very drought-resistant, hardy grain.

"The crop itself has a future, a bright one-especially in regions where climate change may lead to more erratic rainfall patterns as pearl millet is highly drought tolerant. It already is a popular food crop in semi-arid regions of India and Africa and will likely gain interest from drought-prone regions of the developed world as an alternative to corn in animal feed," Parvathaneni said.

Google pledges to only use open-source related patents defensively

Google has taken to its Open Source Blog today to announce that it is creating a new pledge to never use its patents related to open-source software unless attacked first.

The new pledge, officially named the "Open Patent Non-Assertion Pledge" (or OPN Pledge for short), indicates that unless otherwise attacked by another creator of open-source software, Google will not use its patents against any other entity. The entire pledge runs a few paragraphs (and can be seen at the source link below), but the idea is that Google wants to be able to hold patents to protect itself (and software) from attack while agreeing to not attack themselves. A small excerpt from the pledge reads:

It is Google’s intent that the Pledge be legally binding, irrevocable (except as otherwise provided under “Defensive Termination” below) and enforceable against Google and entities controlled by Google, and their successors and assigns.

Meaning that not only does the pledge apply to Google's own operations, but also those of any company owned or operated by it -- such as Motorola, presumably -- as well as any company that buys or sells patents with Google. The pledge states that any company receiving patents from Google must agree to the terms of the pledge in their own use, and also have similar requirements if it were to ever transfer the patents again to a third entity.

It is worth noting that the OPN Pledge only applies to other entities that are also making open-source software, and makes no mention that Google's patents couldn't be used offensively against one making closed-source software. And while Motorola presumably falls under the category of "entities controlled by Google", because it is technically being run as an independent company we're unsure on how this pledge affects it.

Reiterating that it believes that open internet and open software systems are the best choice for everyone, Google is hoping that the OPN Pledge "will serve as a model for the industry". It also notes the devotion to open-source software by other entities like IBM and Red Hat, which are said to be examples for what the OPN Pledge was built on.

I?m a single 20-something freelance web designer/web developer. I?ve read the ?4-hour work week?. It all sounds very appealing: I?d love to be able to travel the world without having to worry about money too much. Is it really possible for someone like me to create streams of passive income that would make this dream come true?

Yes.

You don?t need that much money to pull that off. With $2000-3000/month you can easily travel through most places in Eastern Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa. That?s of course assuming that you?re fine with traveling on a lower-end budget (no ?5-star hotels).

I?d say that your best bet is probably SaaS because it?s recurring income (as opposed to one-time purchases such as e-books or video courses).

It might take longer than you think to get to that $2000-3000/month level, though.

I have a full-time job, family, and a mortgage. I don?t want to quit my job and?backpack?through Southeast Asia. ?I want extra income to create a better life for my family. Is making money online a good option for me?

Yes, if you are willing to put in the time and energy required to create and maintain streams of passive income, which might be demanding when combined with your other obligations.

I?d even say that passive income is necessary to people who have serious financial obligations (kids, car payments, health insurance, mortgage, etc.).

You don?t want the livelihood of your family to depend on a single source of income: your job. We all saw how well that worked out for thousands of people back in 2008, didn?t we?

In my opinion, passive income is more about financial security, than it is about the ?location independent lifestyle.

How much time does it take to create a reliable source of passive income?

It depends.

You can start making a little amount of money straight away by creating WP plugins and selling PSD templates.

You will need a lot more time and knowledge if you want to make money with e-books, apps, video courses, SaaS, etc.

I?d say that it will probably take longer than you think. Don?t quit ?your job just yet.

How much time does it take to maintain a source of passive income?

It depends on what kind of system of passive income you have set up.

In general, once the system is up and running, you should be able to maintain it by spending a few hours a week or so on it, especially if you outsource many tasks related to it.

Keep in mind that often if you don?t spend time on marketing your product/service the stream of passive income dries up over time, though.

Do you need to have a blog in order to make money online?

No.

You need to find a real pain that people are experiencing right now and offer a solution that they are willing to pay for.

I?d even say that I think that blogging is often overrated for the wrong reasons. It is indeed a good way to build your personal brand and accelerate your web design career. It isn?t the easiest way to make money online though, it requires a lot of resources and time.

I?d say that if making as much money as possible is your primary goal you might be better off by creating a video course or SaaS.

Attention: making passive income online is not as easy as it might look!

Okay, so I don?t like giving people rose tinted glasses, then watching them fail, therefore I?ll be blunt with you:

Bad news: Making money online is HARD. It requires a massive time and energy investment over an extended period of time. Please don?t even start if you are not willing to face this harsh reality.

Good news: You can achieve similar results much faster than most people in these interviews. In order to do that, you need to commit to learning online marketing, which will help you avoid wasting time on all the silly mistakes that beginners make. It?s much easier to get the results you want when you know what you are doing.

The world of online marketing can be very confusing, though. You are bombarded with conflicting advice from different gurus. How do you know which people are legitimate experts and which are just con artists? That?s the problem: you don?t.

Macquarie expands in UK power sector

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Macquarie Bank is expanding its power trading business in the UK, hiring traders from rival banks and sourcing electricity from newly acquired power plants in hopes of becoming a bigger player in the sector.

The Australian banking group has hired six traders and acquired two power station management agreements in the UK in recent months as part of the expansion, Nicholas O'Kane, global head of Macquarie's Energy Markets Division, said in an interview.

"We have, in the last three to four months, taken the opportunity to build up that business," O'Kane said, pointing to client requests as the reason for the expansion.

The move highlights the growth opportunities available to some financial players as others have retrenched and cut back their commodity operations in the face of regulatory and financial pressures.

It also shows the growing attractiveness of the UK power market, where prices spiked to an all-time high last week thanks to a pipeline malfunction that exposed the country's increasing reliance on foreign energy supplies.

To beef up its UK power operations, Macquarie has hired Turab Musayev as vice president of power origination and structuring and Max Hacker as energy analytics analyst, O'Kane said. Four gas and power shift traders, Adam Frame, Dan Briggs, Sid Rajeswaran and Tim Sheldrake have also joined Macquarie.

Musayev, Hacker, Frame and Sheldrake joined from Bank of America's Merrill Lynch unit. Briggs joined Macquarie from French utility EDF and Rajeswaran joined from BNP Paribas.

The six traders have joined a team of about 15 people in Macquarie's UK gas and power trading desk in London, reporting to Jon House and Erik Petersson, co-heads of Macquarie's energy markets division for Europe, Middle East and Africa, according to a spokeswoman.

The division has also acquired agreements to manage electricity output from two gas-fired UK power plants, which Macquarie is using "as a base to build-out our physical power business," O'Kane said.

The power stations, the 489 megawatt Baglan Bay Power Station in Wales and the 819 megawatt Sutton Bridge Power Station in Lincolnshire, were recently acquired by a Macquarie-led consortium, according to the spokeswoman.

The Sutton Bridge deal closed Wednesday while Baglan Bay was completed in October 2012, she said. Terms of the transaction could not be learned by press time.

Macquarie launched its energy markets division in London in 2003, when O'Kane moved from Asia to the UK to set up its trading desk. Since then, Macquarie has become an active player in the UK natural gas sector but less so in power, O'Kane said.

Macquarie's expansion into the sector coincides with a larger transition in commodity trading among global banks. Stung by losses from the 2008 financial crisis and increasing regulatory requirements, many U.S. and European banks have been scaling back their commodities arms. Royal Bank of Scotland Group, for instance, was forced to sell its Sempra Energy commodity trading venture in 2010 after it was bailed out by the UK government.

Some see the retrenchment as an opportunity for banks like Macquarie to pick up talent in the UK and other markets.

"Extensive layoffs in the UK and elsewhere in commodity units have provided a rich opportunity for banks that weathered the storm to expand or move into active markets," said George H. Stein, managing director of Commodity Talent, an executive search firm for commodity traders in New York.

"The European gas and power markets are particularly attractive zones for banks as they undergo regulatory and market shifts," Stein said.

Macquarie has also added to its power trading team in the United States. The firm recently hired Drew Inman in Houston, Texas to head up its power trading for the Texas market. Inman will be joining three other traders and a team of business originators focused on the Texas electric grid, O'Kane said.

Inman is joining Macquarie from Citigroup and will start on April 8, O'Kane said.

Boris Johnson hopes for premiership suffer setback

LONDON (Reuters) - High-profile London mayor Boris Johnson's hopes of becoming Britain's next prime minister and leader of the Conservative Party have suffered a setback after a faltering TV interview, allies and detractors said on Monday.

Known for his blunt but colourful language and unruly mop of blonde hair, Johnson, 48, is widely tipped as a front-runner to succeed Prime Minister David Cameron at the helm of the Conservatives if Cameron loses the next general election in 2015 or is ousted as party leader before then.

But Johnson, who is famously self-confident, lost his composure in a BBC TV interview on Sunday when faced with a series of difficult questions about his past. Local media described the embarrassing exchange as a "car crash" and as his worst ever interview.

Instead of displaying his trademark self-assurance, Johnson struggled to respond, stammered, and asked the presenter more than once whether they could talk about something else.

"You're a nasty piece of work, aren't you?" the presenter told Johnson, after alleging that he had once made up a quote when working as a journalist, lied about his personal life, and been complicit in plans to physically assault a journalist.

"Interpretations you're putting on those things aren't wholly fair," a visibly shell-shocked Johnson retorted.

Voters "don't care about phone conversations with my friends 20 years ago, they don't care about some ludicrous so-called made-up quote," he said.

He said he disputed the allegations, but appeared - uncharacteristically - not to be able to find the words to defend himself.

"This was his reckoning, and he looked winded, lumbering like a past-his-prime former heavyweight champion," wrote Liberal Democrat blogger Stephen Tall, echoing a popular view that Johnson had finally come unstuck.

TARNISHED IMAGE

Traditional allies agreed the interview had damaged Johnson's image.

"There's no doubting that Brand Boris is looking a little tarnished," wrote Benedict Brogan, the deputy editor of the right-leaning Daily Telegraph newspaper.

"Boris has so far traded on a collective willingness by the media to overlook his record in order to relish his personality. The danger must be that it will now be open season."

Johnson, whose popularity soared alongside last year's London 2012 Olympic Games, admits he'd like to be prime minister in a documentary about him due to be broadcast later on Monday, saying he'd like to "have a crack" at the job.

Cameron, whose leadership is under pressure ahead of a general election due in 2015, has often laughed off suggestions that Johnson could replace him, once describing the mayor as a "blond-haired mop sounding off from time to time".

He defended him on Monday. "Never attempt to limit Boris's ability to get out of a tight spot," Cameron told reporters.

Tim Montgomerie, editor of the influential ConservativeHome website, said Johnson needed to sharpen up his act.

"I don't know if Boris has become soft but it's vital that he disappears into a locked room with his advisers for a few hours and engages in some US-style debate prep," he wrote.

"He should only re-emerge from that room when he and his advisers are confident that today's car crash won't be repeated."

New lung cancer study takes page from Google's playbook

Mar. 25, 2013 ? The same sort of mathematical model used to predict which websites people are most apt to visit is now showing promise in helping map how lung cancer spreads in the human body, according to a new study published in the journal Cancer Research.

A team of researchers used an algorithm similar to the Google PageRank and to the Viterbi Algorithm for digital communication to analyze the spread patterns of lung cancer. The team includes experts from the University of Southern California (USC), Scripps Clinic, The Scripps Research Institute, University of California, San Diego Moores Cancer Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York.

"This research demonstrates how similar the Internet is to a living organism," said USC Viterbi School of Engineering Professor Paul Newton, Ph.D., the lead and corresponding author of the study. "The same types of tools that help us understand the spread of information through the web can help us understand the spread of cancer through the human body."

Employing a sophisticated system of mathematical equations known as a Markov chain model, the research team -- guided by USC applied mathematicians- found that metastatic lung cancer does not progress in a single direction from primary tumor site to distant locations, which has been the traditional medical view. Instead, they found that cancer cell movement around the body likely occurs in more than one direction at a time.

Researchers also learned that the first site to which the cells spread plays a key role in the progression of the disease. The study showed that some parts of the body serve as "sponges" that are relatively unlikely to further spread lung cancer cells to other areas of the body. The study identified other areas as "spreaders" for lung cancer cells.

The study revealed that for lung cancer, the main spreaders are the adrenal gland and kidney, whereas the main sponges are the regional lymph nodes, liver and bone.

The study applied the advanced math model to data from human autopsy reports of 163 lung cancer patients in the New England area, from 1914 to 1943. This time period was targeted because it predates the use of radiation and chemotherapy, providing researchers a clear view of how cancer progresses if left untreated. Among the 163 patients, researchers charted the advancement patterns of 619 different metastases to 27 distinct body sites.

The study's findings could potentially impact clinical care by helping guide physicians to targeted treatment options, designed to curtail the spread of lung cancer. For example, if the cancer is found to have moved to a known spreader location, imaging tests and interventions can be quickly considered for focused treatment before the cells may be more widely dispersed. Further study is needed in this area.

Keeping tabs on cancer's movement in the body is vital to patient care. While a primary cancer tumor (confined to a single location) is often not fatal, a patient's prognosis can worsen if the cancer metastasizes -- that is, flakes off and travels to other parts of the body to form new tumors.

The study is part of a relatively new movement to involve physical sciences in oncology research. Mathematics probability models that interpret data from specific patient populations offer a new alternative to the established approach of relying on broader clinical trends to predict where, and how fast, cancer will spread.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court considers two same-sex marriage cases on Tuesday and Wednesday, one on a marriage ban in California and another on a federal law that restricts the definition of marriage to a man and a woman.

Following is a timeline of main events leading up to this hearing.

1969

- The modern gay liberation movement unofficially kicks off with the Stonewall Riots, demonstrations by gays in response to a police raid in New York City.

1972

- The U.S. Supreme Court lets stand a Minnesota Supreme Court ruling that the law does not allow for same-sex marriage, and that the issue is different from interracial marriage.

1973

- Maryland becomes the first state to pass a statute banning gay marriage, according to Freedom to Marry.

1977

- Harvey Milk becomes first openly gay elected official in San Francisco, wins seat on Board of Supervisors. He later appeals to gays to come out and run for office, "for invisible, we remain in limbo." Milk was shot and killed in 1978.

1986

- U.S. Supreme Court says "we are quite unwilling" to find a fundamental right to sodomy, even in the privacy of one's home, in Bowers v. Hardwick.

1996

- U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, often called the swing vote on the court, writes opinion striking down Colorado ban on protections for gays, saying the ban "seems inexplicable by anything but animus."

- President Bill Clinton signs Defense of Marriage Act, defining marriage as between a man and a woman for federal purposes.

1997

- Comedian Ellen DeGeneres reveals she is gay. Shortly afterward her sitcom character says "I'm gay" - inadvertently speaking into an airport public address system.

1998

- Debut of television show "Will and Grace", about a gay man and his best friend, a straight woman.

2000

- Vermont becomes the first U.S. state to allow civil unions for same-sex couples.

- Republican Vice Presidential candidate Dick Cheney, who has a lesbian daughter, indicates he supports gay marriage, saying "freedom means freedom for everybody" and that "people should be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to enter into. He said states should regulate the matter, not the federal government.

2003

- U.S. Supreme Court, in another decision written by Kennedy, strikes down Texas anti-sodomy law in Lawrence v. Texas and reverses the 1986 Bowers ruling. Kennedy writes that this doesn't mean the government must recognize gay relationships. "Do not believe it," Justice Antonin Scalia dissents, saying the logic of the opinion points to allowing same-sex marriage.

- The Massachusetts Supreme Court rules in favor of same-sex marriage, and gay weddings begin in 2004.

2004

- San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom directs county to allowing same-sex marriages, arguing the state's voter-approved ban on gay marriage, Prop 22, was unconstitutional. The state Supreme Court stops the weddings on grounds unrelated to the constitutionality of marriage.

2005

- Canada allows gay marriage.

2008

- California gay marriages become legal when the California Supreme Court strikes down the Prop 22 ban. That November voters add a ban to the state constitution - Prop 8 - ending a summer of gay marriage.

2009

- Iowa State Supreme Court legalizes same-sex marriage. It is still the only Midwest state that allows gay marriage.

- Federal court challenge to Prop 8 filed, days before California Supreme Court lets Prop 8 stand as a valid change to the state constitution. Eventually, federal district and appeals courts agree to strike down the ban, which is now before U.S. Supreme Court.

2011

- President Barack Obama's administration ends "don't ask don't tell policy," allowing gays to serve openly in the military.

2012

- North Carolina approves a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in May. In November, Maine, Maryland and Washington become the first states where voters approve same-sex marriage, and Minnesota rejects a new ban.

- President Barack Obama endorses same-sex marriage.

2013

- Boy Scouts of America plan to vote in May whether to repeal the group's ban on openly gay members.

- U.S. Supreme Court on March 26 and 27 hears oral arguments on the constitutionality of California's Prop 8 and the federal Defense of Marriage Act. At this point nine states and the District of Columbia allow same-sex marriage and 38 states prohibit it, according to Freedom To Marry.

Facebook events will now include a weather?forecast if the event is 10 days away or less. Public pages, such as those for local parks and far-flung cities, will also include the weather. The new information will be included on both Web-based and mobile versions of Facebook.

Weather information is provided by Weather Underground. Each single-line entry will include a general forecast as well as the high and low temperatures for the day.

It's a small update for Facebook, but adding automatic weather updates to event pages could be a big help to users. Further, people can use the search bar to find weather for a particular location by typing in "Weather for New York City," for instance. This information is provided by?Bing .

Facebook has begun rolling out its weather feature, so watch for it the next time you plan or RSVP to an event.

A Marine opened fire on two of his comrades Thursday night at a base in Quantico, Va., before turning the gun on himself, leaving all three dead, military officials said.

A relationship dispute was believed to be behind the shooting, which occurred in the staff barracks area of the Officer Candidates School at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Northern Virginia, a Marine official said.

The assailant and both victims, a man and a woman, were staff members at the school and not students,, a senior defense official said. The official called the incident "isolated," adding: "There was nothing random here."

The names of the dead were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Military police and Prince William County, Va., Sheriff's Department officers responded to a report of gunshots about 11 p.m. ET Thursday and found one Marine dead and the shooter barricaded inside the barracks, a Marine official said. The barricade lasted until 3 a.m., when officers entered the barracks and found two more bodies, including that of the shooter, the official said. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

The assailant appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, base officials said.

The base had been under lockdown after the incident, but its status early Friday returned to "Code Green," meaning operations were normal.

A message posted on Quantico's Facebook page?had earlier had told residents to remain in their homes with their doors locked.

Quantico is about 40 miles south of Washington in the Northern Virginia suburbs.

The Officer Candidates School calls itself "the first proving ground for future Marine officers." Its graduates attain the rank of 2nd lieutenant.

It has a reputation for being challenging.

"The mission of OCS is to train, screen and evaluate candidates, who must demonstrate a high level of leadership potential and commitment to success in order to earn a commission," the Marine Corps says on the school's website. "Officer Candidates School training will be more demanding than any you've experienced before, regardless of commissioning program."

Ed Reed was all smiles when he talked about what he was looking for when he entered free agency. He found his landing spot in Houston, signing a three year contract with the Texans. The safety had spent all 11 years in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens before agreeing to join Houston, and Texans owner Bob McNair said it couldn't have come at a better time.

"We play against the best QBs (this year)," McNair said. "We are going against Manning, we're going against Brady, all those guys."

Reed said he's been aware of the Texans defense under Wade Phillips for the last two years and doesn't see an issue fitting in.

"I don't think it's going to be hard at all to fit in," Reed said.
