East Manatee golf cart parade spreads Christmas joy

EAST MANATEE -- For weeks neighbors in the Horseshoe Cove RV Resort have been working on golf carts.

No, they weren?t broken, just being prepped for the 13th annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade.

?We have about 46 or 47 carts,? said Al Hager, parade coordinator.

It?s a far cry from the few participating carts when the parade first started.

Tuesday marked day two of the three-day parade event, which kicked off Sunday.

Many residents spend much of their time perfecting their rides in the weeks leading up to the parade, including Ron Arrick.

He has been working on his train-themed cart, which has lights, makes train sounds and is shaped just like a locomotive, for more than a month.

?It started with a pile of wood,? said Arrick, who has been assembling his train cart for about five years. ?I also built the John Deere (cart).?

That cart was driven by David and Barb Engle, who have a soy and corn farm in Indiana.

?If you want to be crazy and stupid this is the way to do it,? Barb joked before the parade.

Other decorations included a Santa Claus sleigh with four moving reindeer, a locomotive train, a covered wagon, a gingerbread house, four reindeer pulling a sled and a 10-foot decorated Christmas tree.

The parade moved from the neighborhood into Pleasant Lakes Mobile Home Park, where Shirley Tapper and her husband Jim held a viewing party for their friends.

?I like the Christmas tree, you wouldn?t even know it?s a golf cart,? said Tapper.

Among those at the watch party was Madisyn Wandall, 8, who got a teddy bear and candy cane from Santa during the parade and collected a large Ziplock full of candy.

?I like it a lot,? she said. ?This is my second time coming and it was better than last year.?

Those who missed the parade Tuesday can see the carts again Thursday when the parade moves out onto State Road 70 at 6 p.m. and heads for Windmill Manor and Westwinds Mobile Home Park.
