Question: ?I work for a small hospital where I have been treated quite unfairly. For example, I am the only person in my department who has to carry a beeper, because I live nearby and can get here quickly. Everyone else lives out of town, so they are never on call. When someone hired a year after me complained about his salary, management gave him a pay increase.? But when I requested a raise, I was turned down. I was also repeatedly denied overtime pay until the hospital president got involved. After six years of mistreatment, I finally submitted my resignation. At management?s request, I agreed to stay for another three months, as long as my salary was increased. However, my pay has stayed the same. Now I have been told that one of the executives is making untrue remarks about my performance. During the remainder of my 90-day notice, how do I handle his negative attitude??? ?Feeling like a doormat

Answer:? If you have been treated so badly, why on earth did you agree to stay for three more months?? Unless you are legally obligated to remain, start looking for a better job and leave as soon as you find one. ?

In the meantime, if this executive is seriously damaging your reputation, ask your human resources manager to advise him that such remarks could create legal liability for the hospital.? But if he has only made a few offhand comments, ignore them and focus on your job search.

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, as part of the GSMA Connected House, AT&T unveiled?Digital Life,?a Web-based remote security and automation platform that will allow subscribers to open and close blinds, set thermostats and lighting timers, and lock doors and windows. If they're not at home, they can still do all these things from their devices, which will link to a cloud-based control panel. At home or away, they'll be able to see what's going on at a glance.

AT&T says Digital Life is?designed for self installation in the home or office. The carrier says consumers, small businesses and healthcare providers can benefit from the networking of devices such as motion detectors,?connected cameras, security keypads, window and door sensors, lighting and thermostat controls, smoke detectors and water sensors.

Fake cancer case results in $50 fine for woman | Richmond Times ...

Two 12-month jail terms for Martha Ann Nicholas were suspended.

A Mechanicsville woman accused of faking cancer to raise money pleaded guilty today to two misdemeanor charges of obtaining money by false pretenses and was fined $50.

Martha Ann Nicholas was also ordered by Fredericksburg General District Judge John R. Stevens not to take part in any charitable causes and placed on five years of probation. A sentence of 12 months in jail on each charge was suspended.

Stevens accepted the plea nearly immediately and heard no evidence in the case after agreeing to the prosecution's recommendation. Stevens heard the case after Judge Robert D. Laney said he would not accept the plea agreement.

Earlier, defense attorney Sam Simpson had said that Nicholas, who had claimed at rallies that she was a cancer victim, has made restitution of $1,700, the total she had collected for herself.

Simpson also said that Nicholas had been suffering from a psychosomatic condition that led her to believe she had a cancer-like?illness, and that her soliciting donations was from a belief that she had cancer.

Her family expressed relief that she is not going to jail, and that she is receiving counseling and treatment.

Hungarian Gov't to Fund Scientific Society against Premarital Sex ...

Sexual relationships before marriage, cohabitation, and non-heterosexual relationships are harmful, according to a new initiative funded by the Hungarian government.

The Hungarian Society for the Science of the Family (Magyar Csal?dtudom?nyi T?rsas?g) was founded on Febr. 24. Among its members are a Member of Parliament from the governing Fidesz party and the president of the Alfa Alliance, a radical Hungarian pro-life group. The scientific society receives funding from the Hungarian Ministry of National Resources and is sponsored by at least?four members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The meeting of the society was hosted by the National Institute for Family and Social Policy, a research center operated by the Hungarian government.

?Still too many harmful and untrue views are held on the themes of?sexuality, sexual relations, marriage and the family in practically?the entire society, and to change this ?would be worthwhile,??states the draft mission statement of the group.??What is at issue is not value pluralism, but the confusion between right and wrong, valuable and harmful, moral and immoral, humane and inhumane, liberty and lies.?

The goals of the organization?s predecessor,?the Science for the Family Association (Tudom?ny a Csal?d?rt Egyes?let), were to??research in a wide-ranging fashion the themes of family, marriage and sexuality; to designate correct lines of conduct in these themes; to explore harmful processes; to develop and strengthen plans for the optimal reduction in harmful phenomena and for the optimal increase in beneficial processes; and to disseminate these results.??The new format of the scientific society will allow for expansions in this activity.

The Hungarian??Society for the Science of the Family would undertake scientific work along explicit principles.??A healthy family, as defined in the moral sense, is a love community based on the marriage of a man and a woman, the members of which are the wife, the husband and any children they have, including adopted or step-children,??states the society?s funding document. As it goes on to point out, ethical, sociological, psychological and health reasons prompt one to suggest marriage instead of cohabitation and premarital sex. The same text also states that personhood begins at the time of conception.

The society?s founding statement contains digs at the media as well, urging changes in their approach to sexuality. The media?s representation of human beings is ?scandalously primitive, deceitful, harmful and anti-culture,? states the document.??Instead of preparing for a productive course of life, with its recommended psychical and psychological health, and for responsible romantic relationships and future marriage, they encourage one-night stands and single, mixed single, bisexual and polygamous lifestyles. In the meantime, they present faithfulness and marriage as outdated, unhealthy and at times even laughable.?Aspirations to one exclusive sexual partner does not even appear on their programs. They do this with impunity in the Europe of the 21st century, and therefore in our home country as well.?

The new civic organization has developed plans to train public school teachers to teach courses on family values. Mandated by the new national curriculum, which was made public just recently, in early February, school teachers will have to incorporate ten new educational goals into their teaching,?such as morality, national consciousness and patriotism as well as physical and psychological well-being.?Among these new areas are classes covering family life and family values.

As the new Hungarian national curriculum, developed by Hungary?s conservative government indicates,??the family plays an outstanding role in formulating the moral sensibilities, the self-knowledge, the physical and psychological health and the communal being of children and youth. For this reason, there is a societal expectation for educational-scientific institutions to play an amplified role in the raising of children and in conveying moral standards and harmonious family models.?

When fulfilling these societal expectations, any educational activity in the nations classrooms must be in accordance with the Hungarian constitution, ?points out the national curriculum. The new Hungarian constitution that had come into effect on January 1, 2012 prescribes protection for the foetus, defines marriage as a union between man and woman, states that the family is the basis of the nation?s survival and encourages the commitment to have children.

Syria referendum goes ahead amid violence

The Syrian government is offering a referendum vote as part of its reform process that the opposition has been demanding, but many citizens are skeptical of the move due to mistrust in President Bashar al-Assad. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

At least 31 Syrian civilians and soldiers were killed on Sunday in bloodshed that coincided with a vote on a new constitution that could keep President Bashar al-Assad in power until 2028.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a military bombardment of opposition districts in Homs, now in its fourth week, had killed nine civilians, while rebel fighters had killed four soldiers in clashes in the city.

The British-based Observatory said eight civilians and 10 members of the security forces were killed in violence elsewhere in Syria, scene of what has become an increasingly militarised revolt against four decades of Assad family rule.

Voting was under way in the referendum on a constitution which Assad says will lead to a multi-party parliamentary election in three months, but which his opponents see as a sick joke given the unrest convulsing the country.

"What should we be voting for, whether to die by bombardment or by bullets? This is the only choice we have," said Waleed Fares, an activist in the Khalidiyah district of Homs.

At least 89 were reported killed on Saturday, one day before the referendum. Activists estimate close to 7,500 people have been killed in the 11 months since the Assad regime's brutal crackdown on dissent began.

"The referendum in Syria is nothing more than a farce," German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said. "Sham votes cannot be a contribution to a resolution of the crisis. Assad must finally end the violence and clear the way for a political transition."

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called on Syrians in business and the military who still support Assad to turn against him.

"The longer you support the regime's campaign of violence against your brothers and sisters, the more it will stain your honor," she told reporters in Morocco. "If you refuse, however, to prop up the regime or take part in attacks ... your countrymen and women will hail you as heroes."

U.S., European and Arab officials met Friday at a major international conference on the Syrian crisis in Tunisia, trying to forge a unified strategy to push Assad from power. They began planning a civilian peacekeeping mission to deploy after the regime falls.

"It is time for that regime to move on," President Barack Obama said Friday of Assad's rule. On Saturday, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Assad's crackdown belied promised reforms.

Suggesting they think like entrepreneurs, Reid Hoffman has a strong message for college seniors: 'If you don't keep evolving, you start dying.'

Heads up, college seniors. Graduation's right around the corner, college debt's hanging over your head, and that career track you were promised is f'd.

The good news? Reid Hoffman, who launched LinkedIn, says hope is not lost. Hoffman is the guy who invented social media. No, not Zuckerberg. Hoffman invented SocialNet while the Facebook billionaire was still in middle school. Hoffman then went on to play key roles in PalPay and Zynga before launching LinkedIn.

In his new book, "The Start-up of You: Adapt to the Future, Invest in Yourself, and Transform Your Career," he shares key advice for the class of 2012: In a nutshell, approach your career like an entrepreneur.

"You have to think about, 'OK, how do I invest in myself?' " Hoffman explained as part of MTV's Pioneers Speakers Series. " 'How do I build soft assets? Skills, relationships, but also, how do I take an intelligent risk?' Small gambles, things that could lead to a breakout for you."

"Start-up of You," co-written with Ben Casnocha, breaks entrepreneurial thinking down into byte-sized bits, and provides examples from the brains behind Twitter, Flickr and more. The headlines? Be nimble ("permanent beta" in Silicon Valley speak), and build a better network.

"You are not a finished product. If you don't keep evolving, you start dying," Hoffman explained. "And your network is key to how do you find opportunities and how do you get access to the right kinds of people and opportunities.

"It is no longer guaranteed that you will have a career when you graduate from college," he added. "You actually have to live and work entrepreneurially."

This from the billionaire at the helm of a social network half the size of the United States.

Fresno State baseball team drops series opener at Pepperdine

Even an ace needs a little defensive support.

Fresno State's Tyler Linehan didn't get enough Friday afternoon as three errors led to two unearned runs in the first inning of a 3-2 loss at Pepperdine.

Pepperdine (5-1) scored the go-ahead run in the eighth on Taylor Garrison's wild pitch, and Fresno State (3-3) left a runner stranded in each of the final two innings as it suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season.

Linehan, the Bulldogs' left-handed ace, was coming off a 13-strikeout performance in a 3-0 win over Butler in last week's opener.

But Linehan's chances of winning again were hindered after freshman shortstop Chris Mariscal made two errors and senior second baseman Pat Hutcheson committed one within a span of Pepperdine's first three at-bats.

Linehan still managed to last 72/3 innings and struck out six. He gave up three runs (one earned) on four hits.

Fresno State tied it in the fifth on Hutcheson's sacrifice fly. Linehan exited with a runner on second and two outs in the eighth. Garrison gave up a single to put runners at the corners, then threw the costly two-out wild pitch.

The three-game nonconference series continues at 1 p.m. today in Malibu.

Want to get paid $5,500, plus expenses,?for tasting different kinds of space food on Hawaii's Big Island for four months? Join the crowd: About 100 people have applied for the job so far, and there are still six days to go before the deadline.

There are a few catches, though: You'd have to be cooped up in a fake Mars habitat for most of that time, cut off from the rest of the world except for a time-delayed communication link. Forget about packing the bikini. Anytime you leave the habitat, you'd have to wear a bulky spacesuit. And don't expect a luau. The whole point of this exercise is to find out whether it's better to feed you freeze-dried and dehydrated foods, or let you make your own meals from "shelf-stable" ingredients such as flour, beans, rice and cheese. For 120 days, you'll have to write detailed assessments of all those meals ... as well as your own mood.

Such is the life awaiting six prime crew members and two alternates next year during a 120-day simulated Mars mission known as Hawaii Space Exploration Analogue and Simulation, or HI-SEAS.

University of Hawaii researcher Kim Binsted says the applications have been streaming in as the Feb. 29 deadline approaches. She can tell where HI-SEAS has gotten a shot of publicity by keeping track of where the emails are coming from on any particular day. "Apparently Italy heard about us yesterday," she said. By next week, she expects to have 200 or so applications to choose from.

The selection criteria are relatively stringent: a bachelor's degree in science, math or engineering ... three years of graduate school or professional experience ... ability to pass a flight physical exam ... 24 months of being tobacco-free. Plus, of course, a normal sense of taste and smell. "We're looking for people who would be as astronaut-like as possible," Binsted told me.

The simulation, conducted by researchers at Cornell University and the University of Hawaii at Manoa, is designed to find out which kinds of foods would make the most sense for a months-long mission beyond Earth orbit. Are meals be more satisfying if they're made from bulk ingredients, or will it turn out that the usual pre-packaged, no-muss meals are actually more suited to space missions?

After selection and training, the crew members will travel to Hawaii in early 2013 and get settled inside a simulated habitat that will probably be set up in the Big Island's Saddle Road area. Binsted said "it's very stark, very Marslike," with fresh lava flows from the Mauna Loa volcano. In addition to their food-tasting duties, the crew members should have some spare time to conduct other research studies, as long as they stay in character for the simulation.

Binsted said the entire three-year project is supported by a $947,000 NASA grant, and about a third of that will go toward the 120-day taste test. The project also includes a head-down, bed-rest study that's being conducted at the NASA Flight Analogs Research Center in Galveston, Texas, to simulate the effects of long-term microgravity.

Many astronauts have observed that food seems to lose its flavor in space ? which is why hot sauce is such a popular condiment for crews on the International Space Station. Binsted said the bed-rest study could determine whether the hot-sauce effect arises because of a physical effect (for example, swelling of the nasal passages in zero-G) or a psychological effect.

"There's not a lot of 'spice' in their life, so maybe they have to get it from their food," she said.

General comments

The submitted article provides an account of the difficult times education in Tanzania is going through. In particular, it describes the decline in academic performance, with and emphasis on secondary school students. Although this is a topic which is recurrently addressed in the literature, it is always of interest given the importance for all countries of improving the opportunities to access to education, as well as improving qualitatively and quantitatively the educational quality of a country?s educational system.
Yet, the presentation and discussion of results presented in the aricle is too superficial. The fact that a study is defined as descriptive does not imply that it is simply sufficient to transfer numeric data in tables to written language in the body of the text. It is necessary to give substance to the descriptive analysis through the use of conceptual and theoretical elements that need to be previously worked out in the paper. It is essential to remember that theoretical elements should be considered tools for the interpretation of the data extracted from the social world.

Suggestions

The suggestions outlined below focus on the following issues: 1) context of the study 2) theoretical aspects, 3) methodological decisions and 4) presentation of results and conclusions.

1) At the level of context: The information that is presented should be elaborated and this would contribute to make the text much more comprehensible. For example, more should be said about the distinction between the types of secondary schools that is mention in the paper or about the teacher development programs to which are discussed.

(2) At a conceptual theoretical level: I think it is important to developing some concepts, especially those referred to the quality of the educational system and the opportunity structure present in society. This should be done paying particular attention to access to formal education, since these are the concepts that would develop the analysis of the data provided.

(3) At a methodological level: There are some deficiencies that can be solved by paying more attention to aspects of internal coherence of the research design. A first issue is related to sampling procedures, not explicit criteria is presented to definition of the study population or the sample size and the paper only presents the mechanisms used to select samples. As regards the type of study that is presented in the paper, the author argues that it is a study with a descriptive aim, however, the results that are presented are oriented towards ?factors which lead, to a greater or lesser extent, to the decrease in academic performance of the students?, thus in effect a causal logic prevails.

(4) At the level of the presentation and discussion of results and the conclusions of the study: Despite the descriptive goal of the paper, all effort is (discursively) aimed at proposing the existence of factors which explain the decline in the academic performance of students in recent years. From my perspective, the information on which the conclusions draw does not do allow to do this; in other words, conclusions and presented results do arise directly from the data that was collected. This question of internal coherence should be reviewed.

Final assessment

Although the main topic of the article is of permanent interest, it is also very important to address the aspects outlined above. In the current version I would not recommended the publication of the article. I would suggest a substantial revision which paid special attention to the conceptual and theoretical aspects and the issues internal coherence of the study presented above (approach goals, conceptual aspects, methodology, results, conclusions).

Nokia to unveil cheaper Windows smartphone: sources

HELSINKI?? Nokia will next week unveil a new, cheaper smartphone using Microsoft's Windows Phone software, targeting a wider market for its new range of smartphones, two sources close to the company said.

Cheaper phones are the key for Nokia and Microsoft in their battle to win a larger share of the market, analysts say.

In addition to the new Lumia 610 Nokia will also unveil at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona a global version of its high-end Lumia 900 phone, which AT&T is scheduled to roll out in the United States, the sources said.

Nokia is set to unveil the phones at a news conference next Monday, on February 27.

Nokia last year dumped its own smartphone software platforms in favor of Microsoft's Windows Phone, which has so far had a limited impact due to the high prices of phones using it.

Mold Chases Denver Family From Their Home After Clean-Up Job ...

DENVER (CBS4) ? A northeast Denver family is fighting for a healthy home. They had a mold clean-up job done in December, but say the mold still exists.

The family contacted 4 On Your Side Consumer Investigator Jodi Brooks for help. She organized different mold tests. CBS4?s test results confirm high levels of mold still in the home.

A bathroom tested high, and so did the master bedroom. CBS4?s test results now have the attention of the people in charge of the remediation project.

?It?s just crazy. It needs to end,? homeowner Dontrael Starks said.

?There?s still mold. There?s still a bunch of mold in here,? homeowner Tiffany Jones said.

Jones and Starks have three children ? twins Aadyan and Honor, who turn 3 years old in March; and little Zaryia, who will turn 2 years old also in March. Jones and all of the children suffer from asthma, and Aadyan also has autism. So for the family, a healthy home is paramount.

?I couldn?t image someone else?s family going through this and being this patient for all this time,? Starks said.

For more than 80 days now the family has been living in temporary housing, refusing to move back into their home.

?We just wanted the job done right, and i feel that they just didn?t do that at all,? Jones said.

Jones and Starks volunteered for a research study conducted by National Jewish Health. The consent form provided to the family calls it a ?Healthy Homes: Healthy Kids? study. Offering ?no guarantees or promises,? but with the purpose of ?improving your home environment? to ?improve you or your family?s health.?

Northeast Denver Housing Center is a partner in the project along with Denver Urban Renewal Authority.

?It upsets me because I just feel like nobody cares. I just feel like they don?t care; like honestly do not care about our family,? Starks said.

Because after the work was done, and their case was officially closed, Jones and Starks strongly believed mold still existed.

?Even on your finger you have enough moisture to have it read in this case 24.7 percent moisture content,? Bob Woellner with Quest Environmental said.

Removing the moisture and its source is key in mold remediation,? according to Woellner.

?Anything less than 12 percent is considered to be dry,? Woellner said.

So with the moisture meter Woellner checked the bathroom and behind the laundry room.

?Pull up a tile, there?s a loose tile here. The wood and the grout underneath it is 40 plus moisture content. ?I would not want to move back until all the work was completed, which means making sure the sources of moisture are eliminated.?

But the only way to confirm mold remains in the home is to test it. Weecycle Environmental Consulting based in Boulder did the initial mold tests back in July of 2011. CBS4 hired them again.

?I?d say we still have an issue,? Weecycle Environmental Consulting President
Judy Sawitsky said. ?At this point I would say this is not a particularly healthy house to live in.?

One-hundred-twelve northeast Denver families have been enrolled in the National Jewish Health study. Sixty of those homes required remediation work and 40 of those 60 involved mold.

According to Dr. Mike Van Dyke of National Jewish the Jones and Starks home is the only home that continues to have issues.

?Every indication we had by multiple individual reports was that this job was fixed,? Van Dyke said.

But then Van Dyke reviewed the latest mold test results. He said the cause of the mold in the home was from a leaky water heater, a leak under the kitchen sink, and a leak behind the shower surround in the bathroom.

It?s clear the work is not complete.

?Oh we?re definitely committed to seeing what needs to be done and try to see where that mold is coming from,? Van Dyke said.

It?s a step closer.

?We can?t live like that,? Jones said.

National Jewish has been in contact with the family and plans to inspect the home this week. Anything they identify as a quality issue related to the work that had been performed will be corrected.

National Jewish says it will do its best to figure out the mold issue, but it cannot promise it will pay for all the problems.

Working closely with the Executive Director and other senior leadership (including Director of Development and Operations Director), the Director of Communications and Marketing will coordinate Town Hall?s overall communications strategy, expanding community awareness of our organization and its programs. Further, the Director of Communications will have responsibility for ticket income by designing campaigns to meet goals for Town Hall?s self-produced events. Responsibilities

• Design and lead an organizational branding and awareness project with board, staff, and community participation, and implement resulting plan.
• Develop and refine Town Hall?s core messages to ensure organizational consistency.
• Develop and implement comprehensive marketing plan to support the organization?s self-produced events.
• Set strategy for all communications: print, online/e-mail/social, and PR.
• Negotiate advertising and media contracts.
• Create and monitor series-specific budgets.
• Supervise Public Relations Director in managing news and media relationships, including event coverage and story ideas.

• Negotiate/manage vendor relationships (printing, distribution) essential to these functions.
• Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Director of Communications will supervise Public Relations Director (.75 FTE), and Designer (part-time).

Qualifications

• Very strong interpersonal skills.
• Very strong collaborative instincts.
• Very strong written communication skills.
• Minimum 2-5 years of either sales/marketing or development experience.
• Broad cultural curiosity/knowledge, and an interest in a timely, multi-faceted program embracing politics, science, the arts, and community events.
• Experience in market research preferred.
• Nonprofit experience preferred.
• BA degree required.
• Knowledge of WordPress.org and Microsoft business applications required. Fluency with Adobe Suite preferred.

Compensation
