When Monticello senior running back Isaac Robinson finally got his chance to shine as the Mustangs? starter in 2011, he was going to make sure he left his mark on his school and for others in the area to take notice. Leading Monticello to a 9-3 record and another playoff berth, Robinson did just that. The workhorse back has earned many postseason honors, including Central Virginia Offensive Player of the Year.

?I look back at our season with a smile on my face,? Robinson said. ?It was my final high school football season and I enjoyed my team?s and my own success greatly.?

His effort in the Mustangs? final game of the season, rushing 31 times for 120 yards in a loss to Liberty (Bealeton), put him over the 2,000-yard mark for the 2011 season as he finished with 2,017 yards and 28 touchdowns on the year. He joined Takeem Hedgemen as the only two Monticello running backs ever to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season.

Hedgemen did it twice in 2006 and 2007

?Monticello football has a lot of tradition,? Robinson said. ?Nothing is more unforgettable than you and your teammates playing through the ups and downs of the game and pushing each other to be a better football player.?

Robinson finished third on the Monticello career all-purpose yardage list as he finished his career with 2,995 yards with 2,489 of those yards coming on the ground. Hedgemen and Richard Nelson are the only two players ahead of Robinson but both started at least three years of their high school careers at Monticello. Robinson, who transferred to MHS from Iowa during his junior year, only started one season for the Mustangs. He rushed for 472 yards in 2010 as a backup.

?Although I would have been happier with a few more games,? added Robinson. ?I believe we had a lot of success as a team with some memorable moments.?

Robinson also gave Hedgemen a run for his money on the single-season scoring list, finishing the year with 170 points. Hedgemen recorded 312 points in 2007 but did it with several more games as the Mustangs played in multiple playoff games en route to winning the state championship.

It?s safe to say that Robinson, though he was only at Monticello for two years, drew the attention of many in the area with his play on the football field. There were only three games in 2011 that Robinson failed to break the 100-yard plateau but there were five games where Robinson went over the 200-yard mark. His 234-yard performance against Fluvanna County on Oct. 21 looked to be a solid career high with just two regular season games to play. He broke it, however, in a 42-40 opening-round playoff win against Western Albemarle on Nov. 11. Robinson set a new career-high as he ran for 276 yards and two touchdowns to extend the Mustangs? season.

Whether Robinson carries his football career onto the next level or not, Central Virginia will remember a kid with a hard work ethic on and off the field and finally got his chance to be the starter and did not disappoint.

?I would like to thank the support of my coaches and teammates,? Robinson said. ?I wouldn?t of had the success that I did this year without them and as I go to the next level of my life, I will always have these treasured memories, Mustang Pride.?
