Xbox One a Serious Business Tool? Nice Try, Microsoft

When Microsoft announced its next generation gaming console in May, it billed the device as the one-box solution for all your entertainment needs. Now, the Bellevue, Wash.-based Windows maker has another sales pitch aimed at small business: Xbox One isn't just for playing Halo and Hulu -- wink, nudge. It's also a serious tool for business.

This claim, however, feels a little far-fetched.

Positioning the console's capabilities as an array of tenuous presentation solutions, Microsoft claims "it's entirely justifiable to make the Xbox One a business expense." Seriously? Here, I've outlined some of the device's capabilities and some simple reasons why I don't think they're up to snuff for business users.

Skype: Microsoft's 2011 purchase of Skype let the company bake video conferencing into Xbox One, allowing multi-person chatting, with a wide-angle 1080p lens for collaborative meetings and presentations.

It sounds handy, and will probably be seamless to use, but the console's $500 price tag is a lot more than the free Google Hangout service that many small businesses already use.

SkyDrive: By stitching SkyDrive, a cloud storage service and app, into Xbox One, Microsoft gives the device true business-friendly potential. But in light of the PRISM scandal, some users are looking for more secure solutions, such as office-hosted cloud spaces. I'd much rather serve up a presentation from a physical flash drive, especially if I don't want it leaking out into the world.

Wi-Fi Direct: A protocol that allows devices to connect to each other via secure wireless networking, Wi-Fi Direct has some potential. But Microsoft recommends using it with a SmartGlass-enabled device -- like a Windows phone or tablet -- to send PowerPoint presentations to your conference room television via your new Xbox One.

Translation: toss your perfectly fine, existing solution and buy an Xbox One and a Surface tablet. Sounds counterintuitive to me.

Internet Explorer: The new console will come with Internet Explorer, so Microsoft reasons, "If you host clients at your home, use the power of IE and the size of your TV to showcase your new redesigned website."

Technologically, this will work, but it will be little help in making Xbox One a taxable business deduction. While property like cars can be split between business and personal expenses, owners can only deduct the percentage used for work. So, if you're going to deduct your Xbox, plan on keeping a mileage log for your Need for Speed Rivals games.

Office Web Apps: Internet Explorer gives users access to Microsoft Office's Web Apps. Pair it with Kinect's movement-based controls, and "now you're free of clickers and light pens to use your hands to for more expressive gestures," Microsoft says.

Unless, of course, you have a habit of talking with your hands. Because then you'll be flailing around like a Fruit Ninja player trying to get back to your slides. And giving users access to Microsoft Office's Web Apps begs the question of why there aren't real Office for Xbox apps, if this is truly a small-business presentation tool.

Future Applications: Ah, the promise of promise. "The app story of Xbox One has yet to be written," says the pitch, "therefore it is entirely possible to find apps down the road that could be of benefit for you and your business." Skype when you get there, Microsoft. I'm betting the cost will have dropped by then, too.

Malawi and South Africa Signs a MOU On Financial Assistance

Lilongwe ? Governments of Malawi and South Africa on Thursday July 13 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on financial assistance to Malawi worth US$35 million.

The MoU was signed by Minister of Foreign affairs and internal Cooperation, Ephraim Chiume and his South African counterpart Maite Nkoana-Mashabane in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania on the sidelines of the SADC Ministerial Committee of the Organ (MCO) that was held to consider the political security situation in the SADC region, particularly in the Democratic republic (DRC), Madagascar and Zimbabwe.

According to a press statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation out of the US$35million, US$10 million was already disbursed to Malawi sometime back and that the money is a grant to the Malawian Government which will be disbursed in tranches.

Typhoon Soulik disrupted transportation and commerce across Taiwan, with emergency crews around Taipei and in its environs struggling to restore power to the 520,000 homes where it had been disrupted, and to remove hundreds of trees uprooted by the storm from streets and roads.

The storm then made another landing in the heavily populated Chinese coastal province of Fujian on Saturday afternoon, packing winds of 74 miles per hour, according to China's National Meteorological Center. That was down from the 101 mph winds the typhoon had boasted on making landfall in Taiwan around dawn.

About 300,000 people in Fujian were evacuated from their homes, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

In Fujian and Zhejiang, another coastal province, train services were suspended, flights canceled and fishing boats called back to ports. China's weather service warned of possible floods and landslides.

Earlier, torrential rains buffeted large areas of northern and central Taiwan, with Hsinchu and the neighboring county of Miaoli reporting totals of 27-31 inches by early Saturday.

Schools and businesses throughout northern Taiwan were closed by government order on Friday, and the military evacuated 8,000 people from mountainous villages considered vulnerable to flash flooding.

Just after midnight on Saturday, a falling brick took the life of a policeman in the Taipei suburb of Tanshui, while elsewhere, the National Fire Agency reported there were at least 21 injuries.

Dozens of flights at Taipei's main international airport were canceled beginning Friday afternoon, though operations were expected to return to normal by late Saturday. Taiwan's high speed rail system also suspended operations, at least until early Saturday afternoon.

AltaVista put out to pasture - but how fares its '90s comrades?

Search engines

Altavista

AltaVista via Archive.org

AltaVista, as it appeared in 2001.

Google Reader isn't the only Internet institution being shuttered this month. Monday is the final day in the life of, if you can believe it, AltaVista, the search engine that started life all the way back in 1995. Thought it was already dead? You're not alone ? in fact, more people probably thought so than actually used it, and that's part of why it's making the trip to the Great Internet Portal in the sky.

AltaVista (or AV, as it was known to the initiated in the late '90s) was one of the most popular search engines at a time when there was actually competition between them. It was picked up by Yahoo! in 2003 but never regained its former popularity.

Of course, these days, Google is the 800-pound gorilla and everyone else is just trying to get by in the margins. But it used to be that different search engines provided wildly different results, had unique looks and fought tooth-and-nail for every click.

AltaVista isn't the only one that survived, or at least, lurched on zombie-like through the years. Most search engines of yore are still around at least in name. Here's how they look today:

WebCrawler

Webcrawler via Archive.org

WebCrawler and the other Infospace sites now serve results from Google and Yahoo.

WebCrawler, the first service that actually "crawled" the full text of a site (now a given), still maintains a front page, although it and its Infospace-owned brethren rely entirely on Google and Yahoo for their results. MetaCrawler and Dogpile, which searched on multiple search engines back when that was a useful technique, are reduced to this.

Ask.com

Ask.com via Archive.org

Ask Jeeves with its eponymous butler character.

Ask Jeeves pioneered the idea of using natural language comprehension in search queries. So depending on whether you asked where or when Julius Caesar was born, it would give different results. It lost the "Jeeves" in 2006 but Ask.com (as it is now known) it still gives fact-based results in addition to Web pages, and commands a modest 2.7 percent of search engine share, according to the latest ComScore numbers.

Lycos

Lycos via Archive.org

Lycos as it appeared in 2001.

Lycos is still going strong, in its way, providing its own search results with image previews of each page and giving users a strong visual experience. Its share of search is microscopic, however, and it doesn't even register on the tracking services.

Hotbot

HotBot via Archive.org

HotBot, as it appeared in 1999.

HotBot, once useful in that it updated more frequently than others and let you search within its results, hasn't fared so well. It's operated by Lycos, but there doesn't appear to be any reason to use it instead of its parent company's search, much less something like Google.

Excite

Excite via Archive.org

Excite hasn't changed much since 2001.

Excite has perhaps aged the worst of them all, looking for all the world like a turn-of-the-millennium era Web portal, all text links and toolbars. It's clearly aimed at people who haven't changed their homepage since Bill Clinton was president. Feeling nostalgic? Excite.com will cure you of that.

Infoseek, always a bit player, has been completely destroyed. It redirects to Go.com, which itself just displays random links to Disney properties. Unless you are interested in perusing the many networks owned by Disney, there's no reason to visit.

South Africa says Mandela still 'critical but stable'

JOHANNESBURG | Fri Jul 5, 2013 7:03am EDT

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's ailing anti-apartheid hero and former President Nelson Mandela remained in a "critical but stable" condition after nearly four weeks in hospital, the government said on Thursday.

Mandela is receiving treatment for a recurring lung infection, his fourth hospitalization in six months. The latest health update from the government followed a visit to the hospital by current President Jacob Zuma.

Mandela's wife Graca Machel, speaking during an event at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, said his hospitalization had offered South Africans from all walks of life a chance once again to be united.

"Although Madiba sometimes may be uncomfortable, very few times he is in pain, but he is fine," Machel said, using the clan name by which Mandela is affectionately known.

The failing health of 94-year-old Mandela, a figure admired globally as a symbol of struggle against injustice and racism, has reinforced a realization that the father of the post-apartheid South Africa will not be around forever.

While Mandela lies in hospital, a row over grave sites has split his family.

Two years ago, Mandela's grandson moved the bodies of three of Mandela's children from a family cemetery in Qunu, the village where Mandela spent most of his childhood, to the nearby village of Mvezo.

A High Court on Wednesday ordered that the remains be exhumed and reburied in Qunu - an edict that was carried out on Wednesday night.

In a court affidavit filed last week, Mandela's eldest daughter, Makaziwe, argued for an urgent hearing, saying her father was in a "perilous" condition and breathing with the aid of life-support.

Vampire Overview

Overview:
Vampires are created by other vampires. One only turns into a vampire after having vampire blood enter their veins. This is often done deliberately, in a ritual, or by being bitten. The vampire turning the human will simply bite it's tongue, letting blood go into the human, turning them. Vampires require the blood of living humans to survive, and it is also addictive to them. The blood of the dead works like poison. Sometimes vampires live alone, or sometimes they hunt in packs.

Strengths:
+Faster and stronger than a normal human
+Sometimes has hypnotic abilities
+Often posses the ability to transform into mist, wolves, rats, or other things
+Stronger senses

Weaknesses:
+An oak stake to the heart
+Decapitation
+Dead man's blood
+Holy water (burns)
+Sunlight will instantly kill very weak vampires, but usually only works to sting them. To strong vampires, the sun only works to slightly blind them.

A Simple Adapter Turns Your Binoculars Into a Smartphone Zoom Lens

A Simple Adapter Turns Your Binoculars Into a Smartphone Zoom Lens

Camera-equipped smartphones aren't quite the perfect replacement for a digital camera just yet. They lack manual controls, use tiny sensors, and their simple lenses lack the ability to zoom. (And no, digital zoom doesn't count.) But if you've already got yourself a powerful set of binoculars, this simple adapter will turn them into a powerful telephoto lens for your phone, as long as you don't mind some unwieldy bulk.

The flexible adapter works with various full-sized binoculars?so opera lovers, you're out of luck. And while designed for the iPhone 5, an included adapter lets it play nice with the iPhone 4 and 4S. At just $18 it's a cheap way to give your phone some impressive zoom capabilities, but only if you don't factor in the hundreds of dollars spent on a nice set of binoculars, and the strange looks you'll get whenever you pull this out. All hail the Reference King! | Pedagogical Skepticism

Allow me to say initially that I love the references on this paper- really just reading the references made me excited to read the paper. However there are 10 pages of references for an 8 page paper- is this appropriate?? This paper has an interesting premise- that the concept of culture, indicted as an obstacle to adoption of pedagogical and curricular reform, is underdeveloped theoretically. The discussion of three perspectives, individual, interactional, and social was very interesting.? Durkheim and Latour seem to make strange bed-fellows, and one is prompted to wonder whether the authors will articulate the ways in which these authors relate to one another (where are they complementary and where do they depart from one another?). While this paper may not be the place for that kind of theoretical work, it does pertain to the assertion made by the authors that they seek to employ a ?well articulated plurality? of ideas. I love the idea of using Latour for this kind of analysis in mathematics education and think that it will really work within the framework of the separate ethnographic case study (which the authors reference as in press), given Latour?s use of similar approaches in his seminal work, ?Laboratory Life?. The illustrative case study presented in this paper focuses on analysing the practice of one teacher from the three perspectives of culture. The assertion that the collective (or social?) perspective of culture is focused on understanding the describing and explaining the persistent features of a culture seems limited, and might be served by reference to more critical socio-cultural theoretical perspectives on culture or perhaps even some ideas from Critical Mathematics Education ala Skovsmose (and why not as the authors have already indicated their willingness to use a plurality of ideas?). It is interesting though that even as the authors claim that the perspective aims primarily to understand and describe, this framed as being so that ?we? can help educators change their practices to be more effective. The conclusion seems sound, and reminds me of a talk given by Paul Cobb at IOE a few years back about a large multi-level project that looked at instructional change at the level of the district, the school and the classroom- this research may be served by, or contribute to, interaction with the researchers engaged in that work.

PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) ? They were fathers and expectant fathers. High school football players and former Marines. Smoke-eaters' sons and first-generation firefighters.

What bound the members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots together was a "love of hard work and arduous adventure," and a willingness to risk their lives to protect others. And now, 19 families share a bond of grief.

All but one of the Prescott-based crew's 20 members died Sunday when a wind-whipped wildfire overran them on a mountainside northwest of Phoenix. It was the nation's biggest loss of firefighters in a wildfire in 80 years and the deadliest single day for fire crews since the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

In the firefighting world, "Hotshot" is the name given to those willing to go to the hottest part of a blaze. They are the best of the best, crews filled with adventure-seekers whose hard training ready them for the worst.

"We are routinely exposed to extreme environmental conditions, long work hours, long travel hours and the most demanding of fireline tasks," the group's website says. "Comforts such as beds, showers and hot meals are not always common."

Above all, the crew's members prided themselves on their problem-solving, teamwork and "ability to make decisions in a stressful environment."

"It's a younger man's game," said Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo, and the statistics bear him out. Of those who died, 14 were in their 20s; their average age was just 26.

At least three members of the crew were following in their fathers' firefighting footsteps.

Kevin Woyjeck, 21, used to accompany his dad, Capt. Joe Woyjeck, to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, sometimes going on ride-alongs. The firehouse was like a second home to him, said Keith Mora, an inspector with that agency.

"He wanted to become a firefighter like his dad and hopefully work hand-in-hand," Mora said Monday outside a fire station in Seal Beach, Calif., where the Woyjeck family lives. "He was a great kid. Unbelievable sense of humor, work ethic that was not parallel to many kids I've seen at that age. He wanted to work very hard."

Chris MacKenzie, 30, grew up in California's San Jacinto Valley, where father Michael was a former captain with the Moreno Valley Fire Department. An avid snowboarder, MacKenzie joined the U.S. Forest Service in 2004, then transferred two years ago to the Prescott Fire Department.

Dustin DeFord, 24, was a Baptist preacher's son, but it was firefighting that captured his imagination.

At 18, he volunteered for the Carter County Rural Fire Department like his father did in his hometown of Ekalaka, Mont., according to The Billings Gazette. Almost everyone knew DeFord in the small town where he grew up and had worked a variety of jobs, the local sheriff said.

He liked to cliff jump and run "Spartan Race" obstacle courses, and he passed the physical test for the Granite Mountain crew in January 2012.

"He was one of the good ones who ever walked on this earth," Carter County Sheriff Neil Kittelmann told the newspaper.

Many of those killed were graduates of Prescott High. One of them was 28-year-old Clayton Whitted, who as a firefighter would work out on the same campus where he played football for the Prescott Badgers from 2000 to 2004.

The school's football coach, Lou Beneitone, said Whitted was the type of athlete who "worked his fanny off."

"He wasn't a big kid, and many times in the game, he was overpowered by big men, and he still got after it," the coach said. "He knew, 'This man in front of me is a lot bigger and stronger than me,' but he'd try it, and he'd smile trying it."

As a condition of hire, each of these Hotshot members was required to pass the U.S. Forest Service's "Arduous Work Capacity Test" ? which entails completing a 3-mile hike carrying a 45-pound pack in 45 minutes. The group also set for its members a fitness goal of a 1.5-mile run in 10 minutes, 35 seconds; 40 sit-ups in 60 seconds; 25 pushups in 60 seconds; and seven pull-ups, according to the crew's website.

"The nature of our work requires us to endure physical hardships beyond most people's experiences," the website said. "Environmental extremes, long hours, bad food, and steep, rugged terrain, demand that we train early and often by running and hiking, doing core exercises, yoga, and weight training."

The group started in 2002 as a fuels mitigation crew ? clearing brush to starve a fire. Within six years, they had made their transition into the "elite" Hotshot community.

At Captain Crossfit, a warehouse filled with mats, obstacle courses, climbing walls and acrobatic rings near the firehouse where the Hotshots worked, trainers Janine Pereira and Tony Burris talked about their day-to-day experiences with the crew in what was a home away from home for most of them.

The whole group grew beards and mustaches before the fire season started but had to shave them for safety.

"They were trying to get away with it, and finally someone was like, 'No. You've got to shave that beard,'" Pereira said. "They were the strongest, the happiest, always smiling."

Former Marine Travis Turbyfill, 27, whose nickname was "Turby," would come in to train in the morning, then return in the afternoon with his two daughters and wife, Stephanie, a nurse, Pereira said.

"He'd wear these tight shorts ... just to be goofy," Pereira said. "He was in the Marine Corps and he was a Hotshot, so he could wear those and no one would bug him."

Andrew Ashcraft, 29, another Prescott High graduate, would bring his four children to the Captain Crossfit daycare, Pereira said.

"He'd come in in the early morning and do a workout, and then, to support his wife, he'd do one again," she said. "He'd carry her around sometimes and give her a kiss in front of all his guys."

Other members of the group were just beginning families.

Sean Misner, 26, leaves behind a wife who is seven months pregnant, said Mark Swanitz, principal of Santa Ynez Valley Union High School in Santa Barbara County, where Misner graduated in 2005. Marine Corps veteran Billy Warneke, 25, and his wife, Roxanne, were expecting their first child in December, his grandmother, Nancy Warneke, told The Press-Enterprise newspaper in Riverside.

At 43, crew superintendent Eric Marsh was by far the oldest member of the group. An avid mountain biker who grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, Marsh became hooked on firefighting while studying biology at Arizona State University, said Leanna Racquer, the ex-wife of Marsh's cousin.

In April 2012, Marsh let reporters from the ASU Cronkite News Service observe one of the crew's training sessions. That day, they were playing out the "nightmare scenario" ? surrounded by flames, with nothing but a thin, reflective shelter between them and incineration.

"If we're not actually doing it, we're thinking and planning about it," Marsh said.

During that exercise, one of the new crew members "died."

"It's not uncommon to have a rookie die," Marsh told the news service. "Fake die, of course."

On Monday, more than 1,000 people crowded into the bleachers and spilled onto the gymnasium floor at the Prescott campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The crowd stood for more than a minute as firefighters in uniform walked in.

U.S. Rep. Matt Salmon said the Hotshots had made the ultimate sacrifice: "They gave their lives for their friends."

"It's times like today that define who we are," he said.

When U.S. Rep. David Schweikert asked audience members to raise their hands if they knew one of the fallen firefighters, about a third of the crowd did.

In a shaking voice, Fire Chief Fraijo described a picnic he threw last month for his new recruits and their families. Earlier Monday, he met with those same families in another auditorium and gave them the tragic news.

"Those families lost," he said. "The Prescott Fire Department lost. The city of Prescott lost. The state of Arizona and the nation lost."
